BNP meet today to discuss movement to free Khaleda

Rafiqul Islam Azad, Dhaka

The BNP standing committee is going to meet this evening, two weeks after the last meeting, to discuss several issues, including resuming the movement to free party chairperson Khaleda Zia. The meeting is expected to discuss activating of the Jatiya Oikyafront and 20-party alliance, post-flood situation, dengue menace and participation in the polls to Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chattogram city corporations, according to party insiders.

The BNP that started holding public meetings at divisional headquarters, postponed it due to recent floods and decided taking part in relief distribution in the affected areas. The party has already staged public meetings in Barishal, Chattogram and Khulna. Now, the party is likely to start holding public meetings in  other organisational divisions, including Rajshahi, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Faridpur, said the insiders.

Party leaders said their utmost priority is to launch a strong movement to force the government to free the former Premier, serving a 17-year jail term in two graft cases. The issue to resume movement to free Khaleda Zia will be the main agenda of today’s standing committee meeting, scheduled to be held at the chairperson’s Gulshan office in the city at 5:00pm, according to a reliable source.

When contacted, BNP standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, said he is yet to know about the agenda of the meeting as he was travelling in his constituency yesterday. He, however, said the issue to free the chairperson by launching a tougher movement would certainly get the most priority at the meeting.

“We had started holding public meetings at the divisional level, but could not continue due to floods following excessive rain and onrush of waters from the upstream. The issue may come up at the meeting,” he said.

The elderly leader further said contemporary issues are also likely to be discussed.

The BNP standing committee members meet weekly on Saturday and the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, joins the meeting through Skype conference.

At the last meeting held on July 29, the BNP told the media that they would come up with a package of movement, along with a legal battle, to ensure release of the party’s imprisoned chairperson, Khaleda Zia.

BNP secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said the party took a decision at the meeting to intensify the ongoing movement immediately for ensuring the release of Khaleda Zia. The meeting also decided to go for a legal battle in this regard, he added. The last two meetings could not be held due to their engagement in relief distribution and Eid vacation, sources said.

The BNP secretary general, at a function at the party’s central office yesterday, termed their failure to wage a movement demanding the release of Khaleda as “unfortunate”.
