11 killed in road accidents

Eleven people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents across the country yesterday (Friday). Among them, five were killed in Mymensingh, two in Tangail, one in Rajbari, Kushtia, Netrokona and Feni each.

In Mymensingh, five members of a family were killed and two injured when a bus hit a private car on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway in the morning. The deceased were identified as Rafik-uz-Zaman (45), his wife Samsurnahar Shahin (40), their son Nadim Islam (19) , their daughter Rounok Jahan (13), and Rafik's brother-in-law Jisan Kabir Ashraf (25).

Another son of the couple, Nahid (3), and Swapon Mia (30), who was in the private car, are undergoing treatment at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Their condition has been stated to be critical. Confirming the news, Gouripur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Kamrul Islam Mia said: “A Kishoreganj-bound bus hit the car coming from the opposite direction, killing Samsurnahar on spot and leaving five others injured."

“The injured were rushed to the local health complex where doctors declared three of them dead. The driver of the car and another unidentified child were shifted to the MMCH for better treatment,” he added.

The OC also said the bus driver had managed to flee.

In Rajbari, a schoolboy was killed and 16 other passengers were injured when a bus carrying a picnic party plunged into a roadside ditch in Kalukhali upazila.

The deceased was identified as Shamim Hossain (14), a Class-X student of Tentulbaria Islamia High School and son of Shafiul Islam of Gangni upazila of Meherpur. SM Jahangir Alam, OC of Pangsha police station, said that a bus with 40 picnickers had gone to Kuakata of Patuakhali from Meherpur. On its way back, the bus fell into a roadside ditch at Kalukhali in Rajbari as the driver lost control over the vehicle around 3:00am. Shamim died on the spot and others were injured.

“The injured were taken to the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex,” the OC added. In Tangail, two persons were killed in separate road accidents.

In Bhuapur upazila, Abdul Mannan (62) was killed as a Bhuapur-bound auto-rickshaw from Pinga collided with a Tarakandi-bound microbus coming from the opposite direction on the Bhuanpur-Tarakandi highway. Mannan was returning to Dhaka.

In another accident in Nagarpur, Kuddus Mia (70) was killed when an auto-rickshaw hit him while he was returning home from a local market. The accident occurred on the Nagarpur-Salimabad highway. In Kushtia, a woman was killed and 15 other passengers were injured when a passenger bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Mirpur upazila. The deceased was identified as Hosneara Begum, 45. Mirpur police station OC Abdul Alim said a passenger bus going from Kushtia to Chuadanga lost control near Baluchar around noon and fell on the side of the road.

“The woman died on the spot. At least 15 passengers were injured in the incident,” the OC said. In Netrokona, a motorcyclist was killed and his cousin injured as a passenger bus rammed their motorcycle near Atkapara on the Shyamganj-Birishiri highway of Purbadhala upazila in Netrokona. The deceased was identified as Ratan Kha (40).  The injured was identified as Ramjan Kha.

Police said that the accident had taken place when a passenger bus of the Sultan Paribahan hit the motorcycle.

In Feni, a motorcyclist was killed when a bus hit his bike in the Lalpole area on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The deceased was unidentified at the time of filing this report.
