Bashundhara eagerly waiting to win maiden title

SPORTS REPORTER, DHAKA

A surprising defeat made it delay for Bashundhara Kings to celebrate the maiden title in their first appearance at Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football. Now they will have to wait for at least two matches.

Bashundhara Kings, who had every preparation to celebrate their league victory after the match against Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra on July 20 but the All Blues at their home ground in Sylhet stunned the top favourites forcing to concede a solitary goal defeat.

Bhashundhara  could celebrate the big triumph three matches left to play, if they could win the match against Russel but it was simply surprising that they went down to Russel, which made the party delay.

The estimation of the league before the matches held on July 20 was – if Bashandhara Kings would win against Sheikh Russel in Sylhet Stadium, the win or lose of the reigning champions and the closest contenders Abahani Limited at the Bangabandhu National Stadium would not any hindrance for Bashundhara’s celebration.

But the win of the Abahani and the defeat of Bashandhara means, the top two contenders came closer to each other in the point table with the newcomers are leading with 58 points from 21 matches and defending champions  are on 54 from 22 matches.

Now, if Bashundhara will win their next two matches, the win or lose of Abahani in their next two will not matter for Bashundhara to rejoice the winning party with one match in hands.

However, Bashundhara will play their 22nd match tomorrow (Wednesday) against Mohammedan Sporting Club, who blanked their arch rivals Abahani Limited by 4-0 and looked almost certain  to save side of relegation zone with the stunning win.

Abahani will play their second last match against their Chattogram counterparts Chittagong Abahani.

Bashundhara will have an advantage of playing the vital match when the match will take place at their home ground at Sheikh Kamal Stadium in Nilphamari against MSC.

Bashundhara are still unbeaten in their home ground with winning record 10 previous matches and Mohammedan, who looked a bit danger after winning last two matches in a row, will leave no stone unturned to further improve their position in the league table.

So this time it looked Bashundhara may face a tough time to cross the Mohammedan hurdle, though in their first leg meeting the favorites (Bashundhara) had a comfortable 4-1 win at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
