Awami League Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque has said BNP would not be able to ensure release of Begum Khaleda Zia by waging movement as it is a matter of legal procedure.

“She must come out from jail through legal procedure as she was sent to jail for the embezzlement of orphan’s money,” he said.

He was addressing a monthly meeting of AL as the chief guest at Local Shaheed Memorial Municipal Park of the district on Saturday.

Tangail Sadar upazila AL organised the meeting as a part of month-long programme of District Awami League on the occasion of party’s 70th founding anniversary.

With Sadar Upazila AL acting president Amirul Islam Khan in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by local lawmaker Sanowar Hossain, district AL president and Zilla Parishad chairman Fazlul Rahman Khan Faruk and former lawmaker Monoara Begum.

Man attempts suicide after ‘killing wife, daughter’

A man attempted to commit suicide allegedly after killing his wife and daughter at Parnanduali village near the town here following a family feud yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Punya Rani, 25 and her 10-month old daughter Manob.

Confirming the incident, Tarikul Islam, Magura Additional Superintendent of Police, said being informed by locals, police went to the rented house of Bitu Mazumder, 40, and found the throat-slit bodies of his wife and daughter lying in a pool of blood.

Bitu, who sustained injuries on throat following a suicide attempt, was admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital, he said.

The bodies were sent to hospital morgue for autopsy and a case has been filed in this regard, he added.

School teacher stabbed dead

A female teacher of a primary school was hacked to death by some miscreants in Shologhar area of Sadar upazila on Sunday.

Police recovered the body from her house at Water Development Board Officials Colony in Shologhar around 4:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Joyonti Chakraborty, 48, an assistant teacher of Shologhar Government Primary School and wife of Alok Kumar Chakraborty, an official of local Water Development Board.

Jahid Parvej Chowdhury, Additional Police Superintendent of Chandpur Sadar, said that the reason behind the killing is not clear yet. Police is looking into the matter, he said.

Two killed in road accident

UNB, Chapainawabganj

Two people, including a retired army person, were killed and another one was injured in two separate road accidents yesterday.

The deceased were identified as retired army member Mojibur Rahman, 45, son of Kuran Ali of village Boglain Gomostapur upazila and Shafiqul Islam, 50, son of Ataur Rahman of Chhatrajitpur of Shibnganj upazila.

Officer-in-charge of Gomostapur police station Jashim Uddin said that a truck collided head on with a fish-laden trolley at Rahanpur at 7 am , leaving Mojibur Rahman, who was on the trolley, dead on the spot.

On the other hand, a motorcyclist was killed after being dashed by a pick-up van at Piling intersection of Shibganj upazila.

Ripon Kumar, SI of Shibganj police station, said that a pick-up van hit the mango trader Shafiqul Islam at 7-30 am while he was going to Kansat bazar along with his friend Bokul riding a motorcycle, leaving him dead on the spot.

Seriously injured Bokul was admitted to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
