Punishment to rapists demanded

DU students form human chain

Several students of Dhaka University formed a human chain yesterday on the campus protesting the recent spate of child rape incidents and demanded capital punishment to rapists in public. Over five hundred students mostly were female took part in the human chain programme under the banner of ‘General Students of Dhaka University’ at the altar of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus in the morning.

Among general students leaders of various hall unions were seen to take part in the protest.  In the human chain, they used various placards’ and posters with written-‘Want capital punishment to rapists, no punishment wanted rather award death penalty to rapists, etc.

Rokeya Hall Union assistant general secretary Falgooni Das Tonni said, “At least an incident of rape is being occurred especially rape of child in an everyday that is not tolerable and acceptable in a civilised state, so we want death penalty to such kind of rapists”.

“Law enforces sometimes nabbed the rapist but they are not brought to book properly that is why we demand that rapists must be punished awarding them to death penalty through especial tribunal within 30 working days” said Shamsunahar hall union general secretary Ziasmin Shanta.

Expressing solidarity with them environment scientist Dr Kanij Aklima Sultana said If the government will take stern action against rapist then it will be brought under control as whenever the incident of throwing acid was spread epidemic then state took stern action against them as a result those incident were brought to under control now.  

They also announced to submit memorandum in this regard to the resident, prime minister and chief justice on Thursday.
