Steps needed to lessen monsoon woes

Steps needed to lessen
monsoon woes

Heavy rainfall across the country under the influence of the monsoon caused sufferings to people throughout the day on Monday. Chattogram division was among the worst sufferers as two including a child were killed in landslide triggered by rainfall at Kaptai upazila in Rangamati.  In Chattogram city, rain submerged most of the low-lying areas under knee-deep to waist-deep waters, leaving normal life in disarray. Water entered into low-lying residential houses, educational institutions and business firms leaving hundreds of people marooned in the city.

Incessant rains throughout the day jeopardized life in the capital. Commuters, especially office goers and students, were the victims of the rain due to lack of public transports and the situation was compounded by traffic gridlocks on main thoroughfares amid the incessant rain since early morning. Heavy rainfall during monsoon is a natural phenomenon in our country. But what is worrying is landslide and water-logging which cause a lot of sufferings to people.   Due to scarcity of land, people are forced to live at foothills or on the slopes of hills. Landslide has become a major disaster in the hilly regions of the country, occurring almost every year.  Cutting of hills rampantly triggered disasters in the past. Some influential people including those belonging to the ruling party are abetting the crime.

During the last five decades, CHT suffered about 12 major landslides.  What have made thing worse is the fact that despite their familiarity with the dangers of monsoon season, local authorities have found it difficult to carry out rescue operations during bad weather. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that the population in the hilly districts is increasing rapidly and in no way are the hills are safe for habitation especially in their current state.

The major canals of Dhaka city have been grabbed by unscrupulous people.   As a result, there is hardly any outlet for rainwater to pass. Only one or two hours rain is enough to cause water-logging in the city exposing the people to sufferings. The drainage system in the capital is dysfunctional due to clogging of the drains. Every year, people are moved into temporary tents during the monsoon season. This however is hardly a permanent solution. Permanent solution to the problem is the demand of time.
