‘Gang rape’ accused, ‘drug dealer’ killed in gunfights

A 'gang-rape' accused was among two people killed in separate alleged gunfights with law enforcers in Mymensingh and Dhaka yesterday. In Mymensingh, rape case accused Saiful Dakat of Koiadi village of Bhaluka upazila was gunned down in a gunfight with police. He was accused in a case filed over the gang-rape of a Class-VIII girl in the upazila. On the basis of secret information, a joint team of DB and Bhaluka Police Station conducted a drive in Hatiber area around 1am to arrest the gang-rape accused, said Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of police. Sensing danger, the criminals opened fire on law enforcers, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight, he said. After the gunfight, bullet-hit Saiful was rescued by police and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. A pipe gun and three knives were also recovered from the spot, claimed Kamal.

The schoolgirl was gang-raped at Koiadi village on June 16 last and a case was filed over the incident on June 26. In Dhaka, a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Uttarkhan area. The deceased was identified as Md Anwar Hossain, 28. He was accused in 16-17 narcotics cases filed with different police stations in the city, the RAB said.

Md Quamruzzaman, Company Commander of RAB-1 and senior assistant superintendent of police, said tipped off that a group of drug peddlers gathered at Shahidnagar, a RAB team conducted a drive there around 1:55am. Sensing their presence, the drug pushers opened fire on them, forcing the elite force members to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight, he said.

After the gun battle, bullet-hit Anwar was found lying on the ground, the RAB officer said, adding that he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

A RAB member was also injured in the incident, he claimed, adding that they recovered 3,000 Yaba pills, a short gun and six cartridges from the spot.
