Madrasa teacher held for ‘rape attempt’ on minor student
UNB, Savar

A madrasa teacher was held for his reported attempt to violate a minor girl at Anandapur here on Monday. The arrestee is Idris Ali, 35, a teacher of Talimul Quran Madrasa of the area. FM Sayed, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said the victim, 5, hailing from Imandirpur of Savar municipality area, is a student of the madrasa. On Monday, the teacher took the girl to his room during the break at noon and attempted to rape. Hearing victim's scream, locals rushed in and rescued the girl. They caught the teacher and handed him over to police after giving him a good thrashing. Later, a case was filed against him, the OC added.

2 killed as truck dashes pickup
UNB, Gazipur

Two people were killed and four others injured as a truck hit a pickup in the city yesterday. One of the deceased was identified as Mohammad Naim, hailing from Kishoreganj district. Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Samir Sutradhar said the truck crashed into the Sreepur-bound pickup from behind at Purabari around 2:30am, leaving two of its passengers dead on the spot and four others injured. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Naim met the accident while going to his father-in-laws' house at Mawna of Sreepur from Tongi.


Female cop ‘commits’ suicide
UNB, Chattogram

A police constable committed suicide at her residence under Bayazid Bostami Police Station area in the city on Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Kabita Rani, 22, wife of Mithun Kuri, also a police constable of Armed Police Battalion Line in Chattogram, said Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bayazid Bostami Police Station. “The mystery of the death would be cleared after investigation. The couple were both deployed constables of Armed Police Battalion Line,” the OC said.
Returning to home, victim's husband Mithun found the door locked and no response from inside.
On information, police recovered her hanging body after breaking the door. The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the OC added.


City restaurant catches fire
UNB, Dhaka

A fire broke out at a restaurant in the city's Moghbazar area on Monday night. The fire originated at the kitchen of Cafe De Taj restaurant at Moghbazar intersection around 8:20pm, said Earshad Hossain, duty officer at the Fire Service Central Control Room.
On information, three firefighting units rushed in to douse the blaze, he said.


Two arrested with arms in Ctg
STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

Detective Branch (DB) of police yesterday in a drive arrested two people along with a country made pipe gun, two cartridges and knives from city’s Shah Amanat Road area under Kotowali Police Station in Chattogram.
The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Rasel, 24, alias Sujan, son of Shamsul Haque hailed from Mohammadpur of capital in Dhaka and Abdul Quader, 25, son of Nur Islam, said Md Mizanur Rahman, deputy police commissioner of CMP (DB).
“Acting on a tip off, we have conducted a drive and nabbed the duo along with the country made arms and sharp weapons,” added Rahman.
