Mahmudullah may miss India match

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmud Sujon expressed his apprehension about all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad and said that he could miss the Tigers’ next crucial World Cup group stage encounter against India on July 2. Riyad received right calf muscle injury during the match against Afghanistan that Bangladesh won by 62 runs lighting up their hopes of reaching the top four of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup standings.

“We have sent Riyad to hospital for a scan. Today we have got the scan report, which suggests the injury is not serious one,” said Khaled Mahmud Sujon. “As of now, he has been kept under observation for some days. The management will then take the final decision regarding him,” Sujon told media.

“But there is a doubt about his participation in the next match against India as the management doesn’t want to take chances,” he added. While batting on one run,

the right-handed all-rounder sustained a calf muscle injury on his way to pick up a single during the Afghanistan match. He batted only after team physio Thian Chandramohan put up some compression tape around his calf. He shared valuable 56 runs with Mushfiqur Rahim before getting out for 27 runs. The all-rounder could take no further part in the game and was taken to hospital for a scan. The scan report suggested that he had sustained a grade-1 tear, which puts his availability for the India game under a cloud.

“Mahmudullah has sustained a low grade calf injury. We’ll monitor his progress over the next few days with regards to his availability for the next World Cup match,” Bangladesh Team Physio Thihan Chandramohan said.

Mahmudullah also had serious injury scare ahead of the World Cup after an MRI report revealed a grade-3 tear on his shoulder. As a result, he has been kept away from bowling in the ongoing flagship tournament.

Mahmudullah was not seen during the fielding at the Rose Bowl in Southampton and Sabbir Rahman was seen on the field as a replacement.

BCB media manager Rabeed Imam confirmed the matter after the post-match conference on Monday.

Bangladesh will play their next match against its next door neighbour India at Edgbaston, Birmingham on July 2, just a week-long gap after the conclusion of the Afghanistan match. They will end their group phase with the match against Pakistan at the Lord’s on July 5.
