Growers happy over good yield, fair prices

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Bhola
Growers happy over good yield, fair prices

Maize farmers in Bhola district are happy as they are getting bumper yield and good price, thanks to favourable weather.

Sources of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bhola said farmers of the district cultivated maize on about 7,223 hectares of land in seven upazilas of this district this year. Due to favourable weather condition there has been a good production of maize and growers are happy as they are getting good prices.

During a visit to South Joynagar village in Daulatkhan upazila a maize grower Kabir Hossain, 45, told this correspondent that he harvested 25 to 30 maunds of maize from his one acre of land this year. He also said he sold per maund of maize at Tk 800 to Tk 1,000 and he has got over Tk 15,000 as profit from his one acre of land. Maize growers Nurul Islam, 50, and Abu Taher, 35, of Chapata village said they are interested to cultivate maize if marketing facilities are ensured in future. But some other farmers said due to some difficulties in marketing they crushed maize and wheat, and afterwards prepared mixed flour to sell them to the fish farmers who usually use them as fish feed.

When contacted, Binoy Krishna Devnath, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension, Bhola said soil of Bhola is suitable for maize cultivation.
