Health care for children

Health care for children

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam while inaugurating the national Vitamin-A Plus campaign at Mohammadpur Fertility Services and Training Centre (MFSTC) in Dhaka yesterday morning rightly urged the parents to be more conscious about the health of their children. Atiqul administered vitamin-A capsule to some children aged between 5-59 months.

Today’s children are the future citizens of the country. Development of the country cannot be expected ignoring the welfare of the children. If they do not grow up in a healthy manner, how will they take responsibility of the country? Underprivileged children are exposed to harsh realities of life.  Most of these children are growing up in a dirty and unhygienic environment. They face malnutrition and different diseases. Healthcare is one of the basic human rights that a citizen should enjoy. But how many citizens can enjoy the same?

The number of physicians in the country is not adequate for the burgeoning population. Besides, how many doctors are performing their responsibility sincerely and with a sense of commitment? It is the prime responsibility of doctors to ensure the medical services to people but it is disturbing to note that there are some doctors who have developed the tendency of dodging their responsibility. This is contrary to their service rules and violates departmental discipline. As a result, patients and their relatives have to suffer.

There is shortage of doctors in many hospitals of the country, particularly in upazila health complexes. Many upazila hospitals do not have child specialists. This problem should be addressed properly. Besides, the doctors posted to the hospitals are not found doing their duty. This deprives a huge number of patients, including children, from their service. There are doctors who do not want to leave the capital and the divisional cities. Absence of the facilities they enjoy makes them adamant. The residential facilities for doctors at upazila health complexes should be made properly.  It is the responsibility of the government, particularly the health ministry and the health department, to find out the absentee doctors and take stern action against them. There should not be any leniency where public health is concerned.
