Hasina vows to build ‘Sonar Bangla’

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Hasina vows to build ‘Sonar Bangla’

Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed her firm determination to build a hunger- and poverty-free ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. “On this historic day, it’s our pledge to build a hunger- and poverty-free ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Bangabandhu,” she said.

Hasina, who is heading the oldest and largest political party in the country, made the promise again while talking to reporters after inaugurating her party’s 70th founding anniversary programme in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi in the capital.

On June 23 in 1949, the party was founded at the Rose Garden Building at the initiative of a progressive part of the Muslim League. The party was formed then under the leadership of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Maulana Abdur Rashid Torkobagish, Syed Shamsul Haque and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“This party has a glorious history of leading the Liberation War. Now, the party is working to take Bangladesh forward through socio-economic development. The Bangalee nation has again regained its dignity, which it had lost after the brutal assasiantion of Bangabandhu in 1975,” Hasina said.

“Today is the 70th founding anniversary of that AL. Whenever this party comes to power, it gives (something) to the country and its people,” the AL president added.

At the beginning of her speech to the media, Hasina, who is now 71, narrated the

history of inception of the party. She also paid tributes to Bangabandhu, as well as numerous party leaders and workers, who sacrificed their lives for establishing the rights of the people.

Earlier, Hasina, who is also the Prime Minister, formally inaugurated the 70th founding anniversary programme of the AL by hoisting the national flag as well as releasing pigeons and balloons. AL general secretary Obaidul Quader raised the party flag. The national anthem was sung on the occasion.

Hasina placed a wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban. After laying the wreath, the PM stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of Independence.

Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Hasina placed another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of her party.

AL advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun; presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury, advocate Sahara Khatun, Dr Abdur Razzaque, advocate Abdul Matin Khashru, advocate Abdul Mannan Khan and Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya; general secretary Obaidul Quader; information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud; foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen; industries minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun; science and technology minister Yeafesh Osman, housing and public works minister SM Rezaul Karim and railway minister advocate Nurul Islam Sujon were present.

Besides, joint secretaries Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, Dr Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman; organising secretaries BM Mozammel Haque, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Enamul Haque Shamim, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Ahmed Hossain and advocate Misbahuddin Siraj; and other central leaders of the party and its frontal organisations were also present.

Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam and South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokan were also present. A team comprising some central leaders of the party also visited the grave of  Bangabandhu and paid tribute to him on the occasion. Meanwhile, leaders and workers of the AL and its associate organisations across the country observed their party’s 70th founding anniversary in a befitting manner.
