AL leader ‘torches’ fisherman’s house in Laxmipur

UNB, Laxmipur

An Awami League leader has been accused of setting ablaze the house of a poor fisherman in Ramgati upazila.

A case was filed on Friday night against six men, including Awami League’s Char Ramij Union unit General Secretary Gias Uddin and his son Riaj Hossain.

Fisherman Gias Uddin’s brother-in-law Liton Hossain Badol filed the case, said ATM Arichul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ramgati Police Station.

Badol said his sister took Tk 10,000 from the AL leader several years ago and already paid back the whole amount. But the AL leader put pressure on the fisherman’s family to pay him Tk 14,000 more in interest.

On Thursday, the AL leader’s nephew Didar Hossain went to Gias’ house with his assistants for money. They set the house on fire after the fisherman declined to pay them, Badol claimed.

Riaj, son of AL leader Gias, rejected the allegation. “We’re not involved. They set their house on fire and put the blame on us,” he claimed.

Police are trying to arrest those responsible for the arson, said OC Haque.
