Awami League at 70

Awami League at 70

We congratulate the grand old political party of Bangladesh, Awami League, which is celebrating its 70th founding anniversary today. Awami League not only led various epoch-making movements that culminated in the Liberation War of 1971 as a result of which Bangladesh emerged as an independent and sovereign state, but also because of its huge contribution to the nation for its socio-economic development as well as realisation of democratic aspirations of the people.

Awami League was originally founded as the All Pakistan Awami Muslim League in 1949 this day. It, however, dropped the word “Muslim” in 1953 to make it a political platform for all people irrespective of their individual religious identities. History says it that the necessity of founding the party arose to counter dominance of Muslim League in Pakistan. Since the party’s aim was to give voice to the people of rather neglected East Pakistan, soon it became very popular here.

When Awami League was under the leadership of founding father of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the party adopted Bengali nationalism as its cornerstone of its political philosophy as the repressive rule of West Pakistan over the people of East Pakistan grew even more vicious and stifling. Before the War, Bangabandhu led massive populist and civil disobedience movements, such as the Six Point Movement of 1966, Mass Upsurge of 1969 and Non-Cooperation Movement of 1971.

In the post-liberation Bangladesh, Awami League became rudderless with the most heinous assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975 and the party was treacherously barred from making contribution to the nation. But that period was very brief and Awami League again became the people’s coveted platform of democratic aspirations under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, the eldest of the two daughters of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Hasina has steered Awami League for almost  four decades very successfully. Even when she was leading the party or the nation for that matter, dark forces tried to put an end to her life. But an unrelenting Sheikh Hasina defied all odds to become the undisputable leader and under her leadership, the poverty stricken nation of Bangladesh has become a middle income one, and for many underdeveloped countries of the world, it has become an economic role model.

Awami League is the party with which Bangladesh’s birth and growth is unalterably related. We hope the party would be able to lead the nation to more progress in every sphere in future.
