Will Sachin’s record 673 runs in a single WC be broken this year?

India Today, New Delhi

In the high scoring World Cup 2019 there is a strong chance that Sachin Tendulkar’s record of scoring the most number of runs in a single World Cup tournament could be broken. Tendulkar’s 673 runs in the 2003 edition of the World Cup is still unbeaten. However, this year, the top two run scorers of the tournament have already made over 400 runs each, with quite a few matches yet to be played.

Australian opener David Warner tops the chart with 440 runs in six games that he has played so far. He is followed by Shakib Al Hasan, the all-rounder from Bangladesh who has scored 425 runs in six matches, including one match which got washed out.

Both Warner and Hasan are yet to play three matches each in the league stages of the tournament. Warner’s opening partner and Australian skipper Aaron Finch is not far behind, with 396 runs. Joe Root of England, and Indian opener and vice-captain Rohit Sharma are two other batsmen in the top five run scorers list. Who among these five batsmen can break Sachin’s record?

The Data Intelligence Unit (DIU) of India Today group analysed the scoring patterns of the these five batsmen in the tournament to see how many runs they could score in all by the end of the league stage, if they continue scoring runs at the same pace (average runs/match) as they have been doing so far.
