Vitamin A vital to healthier growth of children: Experts

Health experts at a press briefing here today said providing under-five children with Vitamin A is vital to their normal and healthier growth. They said this at the event organised by Civil Surgeon Office at his conference room to inform media about preparations taken to make the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign (first round) -2019 on June 22 successful in the district. Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam briefed journalists on preparations taken to make the campaign for over 3.55-lakh under five children (6 to 59 months) successful across the district.

Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Kaniz Sabiha and Medical Officer of World Health Organisation at Civil Surgeon’s Office Dr Irfan Ali spoke. Dr Kaniz Sabiha said Vitamin A prevents mal-nutritional diseases of children like night blindness, bitot’s spots and corneal lesions and suggested for continuation of Vitamin A Plus supplementation for under-five children.

The Civil Surgeon said one dose of one-lakh unit Vitamin A Blue capsule would be administered to 37,863 children (6 to 11 months) and one dose two-lakh unit Vitamin ‘A’ Red capsule to three lakh 17 thousand and 974 children (12 to 59 months) in the district.

“A total of 4,926 people, including 3,664 volunteers, 697 health workers and 565 family welfare assistants will work at 1,832 outreach centres from 8 am to 4 pm,” he said.

Staff Reporter from Barishal adds: Total 3.56 lakh children aged 6 to 59 months would be administrated with Vitamin A Plus capsules in thirty wards of Barishal City and ten upazilas of the district today. Among them 49,500 children would be from Barishal City Corporation areas and 3, 06,963 children would be from 10 upazilas of the district.

Of the total children, 31,867 children aged between six to 11 months will be administrated with blue colored Vitamin-A capsule each while over 2. 75 lakh babies aged between 12 to 59 months will be fed red colored Vitamin A plus capsules in the district.

Dr Matiur Rahman, chief health officer of BCC, and Dr Manowar Hossain, district civil surgeon, holding separate orientation meetings at their offices disclosed these facts on Thursday. They also advised the guardians not to give the capsules with empty stomach.

BSS, RAJSHAHI adds:  Over 25.91 lakh babies will be administered Vitamin ‘A’ Plus capsules in the first round of National Vitamin A Plus Campaign- 2019 in all the eight districts under Rajshahi division today like other parts of the country. Of the total children, around 2.8 lakh aged between six to 11 months will be fed one blue colour Vitamin-A capsule each, while around 23.10 lakh babies aged between 12 to 59 months will be fed red color capsules.

While talking to the news agency on Thursday afternoon, Dr Gopendra Nath Acharya, divisional director of health, said all sorts of necessary preparations including volunteers training and advocacy meetings with all stakeholders and journalists were completed to make the campaign a success.  “We will bring all the enlisted babies under the vitamin A plus capsule feeding on Saturday,” said AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), while addressing a view-in the city yesterday.

During concept paper presentation in the meeting, RCC Chief Health Officer Dr Anzuman Ara Begum said the vitamin ‘A’ plus supplement is helpful for reducing the severity and duration of illnesses associated with pneumonia and diarrhea. She also said vitamin ‘A’ supplement is essential for the normal functioning of the visual system, maintenance of cell function for growth, red blood cell production, immunity and reproduction.
