Weeklong Bangladesh Int’l Theatre Fest underway

Weeklong theatre festival titled ‘Bangladesh International Theatre Festival’ is underway on the premises of Bangladesh Shilapakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

The inaugural ceremony of the weeklong festival was held at the National Theatre Hall of BSA on Thursday. Presided over by the secretary of Cultural Affairs Ministry Dr Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, state minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid inaugurated the festival, while Planning Minister MA Mannan was present as chief guest. President of ITI, Bangladesh Nasiruddin Yusuff Bachchu, president of ITI, World Ramendu Majumdar. Chairman of Group Theatre Federation Liaquat Ali Lucky and Internationally acclaimed theatre director Ratan Thiyam were present at the inaugural ceremony among others.

Aiming to promote and expand the theatrical productions to worldwide, Cultural Ministry, in association with BSA and International Theatre Unit, is organising the festival. The event is supported by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation.

Six troupes from Russia, China, France, India, Vietnam and Nepal and two Bangladeshi troupes are bringing their plays on stage during the weeklong festival.

After the inauguration, Dhriti Nartanalaya staged its dance-drama ‘Mayar Khela’ the musical drama (Geetinatya) by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Today, on the third day of the festival, Bangladeshi troupe Annesha Theatre will stage its play ‘Joytun Bibir Pala’ at the National Theatre Hall of BSA. Written and directed by Sayik Siddiqi, the play depicts the conflict between the haves and the have-nots and sufferings of women in patriarchal society through story of Joytun Bibi.

Began on June 20, the theatre festival will run till June 26.
