Google celebrates Sufia Kamal’s birth anniversary

To mark the 108th birth anniversary of the late poet and social activist Begum Sufia Kamal, search engine giant Google has created a new Doodle on its homepage celebrating the life of the Bangladeshi poet on her birth anniversary. Paying tribute to her memory, Google posted a doodle on its homepage showing Sufia Kamal wearing a white sari on its homepage yesterday.

Born in Shaestabad, Barisal on June 20 in 1911, Begum Sufia Kamal was an influential cultural icon in the Bengali nationalist movement of the 1950s and 60s and an important civil society leader in the independence of Bangladesh. She helped establish a number of cultural and social organisations, including Chhayanaut and Bangladesh Mahila Parishad. Sufia Kamal’s notable writings are ‘Maya Kajol’, ‘Mon O Jibon’, ‘Santi O Prarthona’, ‘Keyar Kata’ and many others.

During the Liberation War in 1971, the poet helped women who were hurt during the war. She was also an active member who campaigned for bringing Pakistani war criminals to justice.

She passed away on November 20 in 1999 and was the first woman to be given a state funeral in the country. The poet was awarded with numerous awards, including the Bangla Academy Award for literature (1962), Lenin Centenary Jubilee Medal (1970) from the Soviet Union, Ekushey Padak (1976), Czechoslovakia Medal (1986), Jatiya Kabita Parishad Award (1995), Begum Rokeya Medal (1996), Deshbandhu CR Das Gold Medal (1996) and Independence Award (1997). l
