Couple dies after inhaling toxic gas in Faridpur

UNB, Faridpur

A couple died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank at Char Brahmandi village in Sadarpur upazila yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Miraj Hawladar, 45, son of late Rashed Hawladar, and his wife Chaina Begum, 35.

Chairman of Sadarpur Union Parishad Md Shahidul Islam and locals said Miraj was cleaning the tank around 11:30am when he inhaled toxic gas and fell sick and started screaming loudly. Hearing the scream, his wife tried to rescue him but she too fell sick. Getting no response from them, their son Hridoy Hossain, a student of Government Yasin College in Faridpur, rushed in and found the duo senseless.

He and his neighbours rescued the couple and took them to Sadarpur Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced them dead.

Son ‘kills’ father in Bogura

A man was stabbed to death allegedly by his son over a monetary dispute in Nondigram upazila of Bogura.

The incident occurred in Purba Para area of the upazila on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain, 50. Police is yet to arrest Anwar’s son, Rony Ahmed, 25, as he is on the run after the incident. Nondigram police station OC Shawkat Kabir said, “A domestic dispute resulted in the knife fight between father and son. Anwar Hossain died from his injuries, while his son remains a fugitive.”

According to local and police sources, father and son locked themselves into an argument when Rony, a human hauler driver, failed to account for his earnings and expenses.

At one stage of the altercation, Rony stabbed his father with a knife. In response, Anwar also stabbed Rony. They both got injured. However, Anwar’s injury was more severe.

They were both taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where Anwar succumbed to his injuries. After hearing about the death of his father, Rony fled the hospital.

4 held for ransacking railway station in Jamalpur

Railway police arrested four youths for ransacking at Melandaha station in the district yesterday.

The arrested youths are Hazrat Ali, 19, and Billal Hossain, 20, Abu Bakkar,19, and Shihab Hossain, 20.

Police said the railway authorities were selling Eid returning tickets.

At that time, the four youths locked altercation with people who were in queue for tickets.

At one stage, the youths attacked in the tickets counter and ransacked the station area.

Fruit fair for children held

A day-long fruit fair was organised in the district town yesterday for children with the slogan “We need nutrition; we eat native fruits”

The purpose of the fair was to introduce native fruits among children and inform them about the various nutrients the fruits contain. Child disease specialist Dr Moniruzzaman Manik inaugurated the fair at CRD School in the town this morning.

Honorary Principal A R Asaduzzaman chaired the function. The organizers said the fruit fair will also help children to be acquainted with the names of native fruits both in Bengali and in English.

A total of 60 stalls were set up where around 40 native fruits were displayed at the fair.

School teacher Nilufer Yasmin, vice Principal Meher Sultana, director of the school Mahmudul Karim, Delwar Jahan and Jakir Hossain spoke, among others.
