3 Rajshahi cops suspended for ‘mugging’   

UNB, Rajshahi

Three policemen of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) were suspended on Monday on charge of mugging. The accused policemen are - Assistant Sub-Inspector Shariful Islam and constables Monirul Islam and Sujon of Rajpara Police station. They have been attached to Rajshahi Police Lines, said Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station. On April 29, Abdul Hakim Manik of Haripur Sahapara in Chapainawabganj filed a written complaint to RMP chief. Manik said that his brother Md Salauddin suffered a heart attack and came to Rajshahi for treatment. A team of police led by ASI Shariful tortured his brother and took TK 7,000 from him threatening to file a case against him. The policemen were not wearing uniform at the time of the incident but they were traced by tracking number plates of their motorcycles. RMP spokesperson Golam Ruhul Kuddus said that a deputy commissioner investigated the allegation and primarily found it to be true.

2 youths electrocuted in Sylhet

UNB, Sylhet

 Two young men were electrocuted while repairing an electric pump at Jaflong in Gowainghat upazila on Monday noon. The deceased were identified as Khokon Mia, 19, son of Alawal Mia of Shiddhirganj upazila of Narayanganj; and Iqbal Hossain, 18, son of Ahaher Mia of Ajmiriganj upazila of Habiganj. Hillol Roy, officer-in-charge of Gowainghat Police Station, said Khakon got down into a well to repair a water pump in Panamar Crossing area. He came in touch with a live wire and Iqbal tried to save him. "Both died on the spot," the OC said.

Zakat donation app launched

BSS, Dhaka

With a view to simplifying the donation and Islamic lifestyle, mobile network operator Robi on Monday introduced country’s first ever digital platform “Noor app”. Using the app, Robi customers can digitally donate their zakat or sadaqah money to a number of verified charitable organisations. National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan unveiled the app at a ceremony in a city hotel where Robi Managing Director and CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed and officials were present. Besides, the online zakat feature Robi in association with Bidyanondo Foundation is also introducing the first ever digital Iftar Vending machine “Amar Iftar”, which will enable the street children and elderly of the society to avail Iftar during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Meeting on proposed HEAT project held at UGC

A discussion on the proposed Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project was held at University Grants Commission (UGC) office in the capital yesterday. UGC organised the meeting to discuss the project structure, finance modality, implementation agreements, project financing, project assessments and other relevant issues. The five-year long HEAT project is expected to enhance graduate employability, improve governance and establish a regional network of higher educational institutions. Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, member of UGC, presided over the meeting. Professor Dr Akhtar Hossain, Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum, members, UGC; Dr Khaled, secretary, UGC, Dr Mokhlesur Rahman, senior operations officer, World Bank, divisional heads of UGC and representatives from WB were present at the meeting.
