DL REPORTER, Dhaka
The icon will live in his timeless songs

Ekushey Padak-winning celebrated singer Subir Nandi passed away early yesterday at a hospital in Singapore.
He was 66.
The veteran singer was taken to Singapore on April 30, two weeks after he was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka following a heart attack. He had been suffering from heart and kidney diseases since long time.
Born in 1953 in Sylhet, Subir spent his childhood in Dhaka and Kolkata. His father was a doctor and medical officer at Teliapara Tea Estate. Subir, along with his nine siblings, learnt music from Ustad Babar Ali Khan. In his long career spanning over four decades, Subir sang about 2500 songs.
His first solo album titled ‘Subir Nandir Gaan’ hit the market under the banner of Disco Recording in 1981. He released more than 20 solo albums in his illustrious music career. His studio albums include ‘Dukher Pore Shukh’, ‘Prem Bole Kichu Nei’, ‘Bhalobasha Kokhono Morena’, ‘Surer Bhubone’ and ‘Ganer Sure Amay Pabe’, among others.
He did his first playback under the music direction of Raja Hossain Khan and Sujay Shyam in Abdus Samad-directed film ‘Surja Grahan’ in 1974. Then, he lent his vocal to more than 2000 tracks for over 300 films in his lifetime. Among this huge number of films he did playback at different times, some of the notable films are ‘Devdas’ (1982), ‘Mahanayak’ (1984), ‘Simana Periye’ (1985), ‘Ammajan’ (1999), ‘Srabon Megher Din’ (1999), ‘Megher Opare Megh’ (2004), ‘Shudha’ (2004) and ‘Shasti’ (2006)
He was bestowed with the National Film Award five times. His first National Film Award came for the film ‘Mahanayak’ directed by Alamgir Kabir in 1984. He was recognised with the same award for the films ‘Shuvoda’ in 1986, ‘Shrabon Megher Din’ in 1999, ‘Megher Por Megh’ in 2004 and ‘Mohua Sundori’ in 2015
Subir Nandi also received the BACHSAS Award in the year 1977, 1984, 1986 and 1988.
He was honoured with the prestigious Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh’s second-highest civilian award, this year for his immense contribution to the country’s music scene.
The evergreen singer’s popular numbers include ‘Tumi Emoni Jaal Petecho Shongshare’, ‘Amar Ei Duti Chokh Pathor To Noi’, ‘Bondhu Hote Cheye’, Brishtir Kachh Theke’, ‘Hazar Moner Kachhey’, ‘Din Jay Kotha Thake’, ‘Koto Je Tomake Besechi Bhalo’, ‘Paharer Kanna’, ‘Sei Duti Chokh’, ‘Keno Bhalobasa Hariye Jay’, ‘Bondhu Tor Barat Niya’, ‘Pakhire Tui’, ’Ek Je Chilo Sonar Konna’, and ‘O Amar Ural Ponkhire’.
The demise of the iconic singer is an irreplaceable loss for the country’s music world. The harsh reality is that a singer like Subir Nandi with such talent is born rarely and there is no replacement of him. Subir Nandi will live in the hearts of the thousands of audiences with his timeless songs.
