Dhaka WASA ‘responsible’ for unsafe water supply

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

A platform named "Wasar Nirapod Pani Andolon" (Safe Water From Wasa Movement) has called upon the Dhaka Water Supply Authority (Dhaka Wasa) to take responsibility for the quality of water it supplies, after angry consumers from across Dhaka complained of getting dirty water.

This was at a public hearing on Dhaka Wasa water, at the National Press Club in Dhaka, yesterday (Tuesday). Speakers held Wasa responsible for the contaminated water and urged stakeholders to take stern steps to resolve the problem.

The convener of the platform, Mizanur Rahman, announced a five-point demand: clean water to be supplied everywhere; compensation for people who have fallen ill after consuming the dirty water; reimbursement for bills paid for polluted water; an investigation into Dhaka Wasa's inefficiency; and  Dhaka Wasa managing director Taqsem Khan's resignation, should he fail to fulfil his responsibilities.

He also said the quality of water supply currently being supplied by Wasa has deteriorated so much that it remains undrinkable even after boiling.

He referred to the organisation's attempt to make Wasa managing director consume juice made with water supplied to Jurain, and said: “The quality of Wasa water has worsened further since then.”
