UGC approves Tk 8,088.49cr for public varsities

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Although budgetary allocations for research work in the country’s public universities have been increasing annually, the authorities concerned said tertiary- level educational institutions are failing to spend the money. The University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday approved Tk 8,088.49 crore budgetary allocation for 45 public universities  for 2019-2020.  Of this, Tk 64.40 crore was for research work in these universities. It is Tk 2 crore more compared to last year's allocation for research.

In 2018-19, the budgetary allocation was Tk 62.36 crore registering a three per cent rise in allocation from 2017-18. “We are increasing the budgetary allocation each year, but the universities are failing to spend the money being allocated for research work,” UGC chairman Abdul Mannan, whose tenure ends today, told The Independent yesterday.

“The major function of the universities is to create knowledge and knowledge comes through research. Once the demand was that the budget for research should be increased. But now that it has been increased, we are not getting sufficient quality research,” he added.

He said the university authorities should pay attention to conducting more research work. Of the approved budget of Tk 8,088.49 crore, Tk 5,089.46 crore is revenue budget and Tk 2,999.03 crore development budget. The revenue budget has been increased by 14.45 per cent compared to the previous fiscal year.

Dhaka University got the highest revenue budget allocation of Tk 764.65 crore, while Sylhet Medical University got Tk 3.60 crore for the first time after being included in the budgetary allocation. Besides, the meeting also approved Tk. 50.97 crore for the UGC for 2019-2020.
