Atrocities on women on the rise

Atrocities on women are on the rise in Tangail in recent times. Rape, eve-teasing, murder, abduction, and torture for dowry have become a common feature, making parents of girls anxious about their children’s future.

An adolescent Pakistani girl of Class-9 was abducted and raped on April 16 in Gopalpur Upazila. Hasan Al-Mamun, OC, Gopalpur Police Station, said a Pakistani national with her daughter living in Karachi came to Goplapur to her husband’s parent’s house on a six-month visa. Al-Amin, son of Abul Hossain and cousin of the girl, tried to violate her.

The members of the family tried to negotiate a settlement. Meanwhile, they were preparing to leave, as their visa was nearing the expiry date. But Al-Amin, with some friends, abducted the girl on April 16. The girl’s mother lodged a complaint with the Goplapur PS. Police rescued the girl from a house in Jamalpur district on April 18.

She was admitted to the Tangail Medical College Hospital for medical test.

A 16-year-old girl was sexually abused in Nagorpur Upazila on April 14 after being lured on the pretext of marriage. The rapist was identified as Mobarak Hossain, 20, son of Abdur Rouf of village Bekra. He also had an accomplice, who has been identified as Rajib Mia Kalu, 22, son of Abdul Mia of village Chobaria under Nagorpur Upazila of Tangail district. Police arrested both, and they were sent to jail on April 16.

It is learned that the girl had gone to visit the Bharra Boisakhi fair. Mobarak and his friend, Kalu, met the girl and took her to Kalu’s house. Mobarak promised to marry her and raped her at night. The two then left her on the Shamsul Hoque Bridge and escaped on April 15.

The girl informed her elder sister. The members of the family then went and rescued her. A case was lodged with the Nagorpur Police Station. OC AlamChad said the two criminals had been arrested.

Five teen stalkers identified as Sakil, 15, Sumon, 16, Al-Amin, 16, Robin, 15, and Manik, 14, used to stalk school girls in Bhuapur. They threw body spray on girls at Agterilla village on their way to school on April 16.

The victims called 999, and police arrested the stalkers, said Jhutoan Chandra, UNO, Bhuapur.

A 19-year-old honours student of Basail Upazila was abducted by one Alamgir Hossain, son of Nurul Islam of Tangail town. RAB rescued the girl from Tangail town on April 17.

In another incident, miscreants killed Rejia Begum, wife of an expatriate, Arif Hossain of village Kabilapara, under Tangail Upazila, on March 28. The miscreants killed the woman in front of her 4-year-old daughter at night in a paddy field.

The charge of sexual abuse of a Class-4 girl was brought against Abdul Khaleque, headmaster of Basudebkal Govt Primary School under Bhuapur Upazila. Rashedul Islam, OC, Bhuapur Police station, said that a case had been lodged at the Bhuapur PS on April 7.

A garment worker was gang-raped on the night of April 12. The rapists tortured the husband and took the wife to different places of Tangail town and raped the woman though the night. Police rescued her from Chorjana Government Primary School and arrested Robin.

According to Robin’s information, police arrested five other rapists. Two others have been absconding. A case was lodged with Tangail Police Station.

Saddam Hossain and his four other friends gang raped a girl in Sakhipur forest on April 3. They raped the girl in the presence of her lover. Shafiqur Rahman, commander of RAB Tangail, said that RAB arrested Saddam Hossain, the prime accused in the case, on April 5.

A college girl, 19, of Gopalpur was raped after being lured with the promise making her a film actress. She was kept confined in a house and was allegedly raped by one Akash, son of Maitkumra of Boalmari Upazila of Faridpur district.

The girl’s father lodged a case on April 14. Police rescued the girl on April 16. Akash was arrested and sent to jail, said Hasan Al-Mamun.

One Dulal Hossain, son of Hazrat Ali of Indarjani village under Sakhipur Upazila, lured a girl of Class-5 with the promise of giving her chocolates. He took the girl to his room and raped her on April 1. Not only that, the brute pushed an iron nut into her vagina. The girl was admitted to the Tangail Medical College Hospital and had to undergo an operation. The mother of the girl lodged a case with Sakhipur PS, said Ameer Hossain, OC, of Sakhipur. Police arrested Dulal.

A girl student of Betduba of the Kalihati municipality was raped by four persons. The girl became pregnant. Mother of the girl lodged a case with Kalihati Police Station on April 6, accusing 4 alleged rapists: Sasti Paul, 50, Mithun Paul, 22, Rodro Paul, 15, and Prosanta Paul, 21. Meer Mosarraf Hossain, OC, of Kalihati, confirmed the case.

One Russel Mia, son of Korban Ali of village Narinda, tried to violate a girl of Class-4 recently. The girl cried. Failing to rape the girl, Russel tore her clothes and bit her on several parts of her body. A case was lodged with Bhuapur Police Station, Meer Mosarraf, the OC, said.

Montu Mia, a teacher of Dopakandhi Girls High School, had been raping a girl student of the village for three years. Local people caught hold of the teacher on March 30 night when he was in the house. He was handed over to police. OC of Goplapur PS, Hasan AL-mamun, said that the teacher was the father of two kids.

Newly married Sajeda Begum, 22, of Loufula under Madhupur Upazila, was tortured for dowry of taka three lakhs on April 14. She was admitted to the Madhupur Hospital with injuries. She was married to Abu Baker son of Yousuf Ali of village Loufula.

Repression to women and girls has become common place in the district. Many cases go unreported for fear of social stigma, it is leaned. Abu Sayed, chairman of Alokdia UP, told The Independent, that many cases relating to girls were being settled through local arbitration to save them from cases on the consent of the victim’s parents.

Assistant Professor of social science of Madhupur Govt. College Johurul Islam said that mobile phone in the hands of minors, foreign channels, and moral degradation was responsible for the perversion in social life.
