We condemn the Sri Lanka massacre

We condemn the
Sri Lanka massacre

The savage attack on churches and five-star hotels in Sri Lanka have brought to the fore the ugly face of fanaticism once more, leaving the world shocked and stunned in disbelief. The fact that the attack on the church was on Easter proves that radicals who orchestrated this barbaric act have no respect for religious events and most of all, lives of innocent people.

As we condemn the serial attacks in Sri Lanka, we express our deepest sympathy for the members of the bereaving families. Our prayers, thoughts and support are with Sri Lanka, a country which has seen the most gruesome killing since the civil war ended in 2009. So far, the death toll has risen to 290 with a Bangladeshi boy killed while having dinner with his father in a restaurant.

The attack on churches in Sri Lanka less than a month after a gunman went on the rampage in a mosque in New Zealand warns us of a perverted ideology which is targeting places of worship. The aim seems to be to trigger a sense of fear and insecurity and create deep divisions in multi-faith societies. The identities of the attackers in Sri Lanka have not been conclusively established though it can be said that after Sunday, the harmonious co-existence of minorities in the island nation will be severely undermined. At the same time, this will sow seeds of distrust and suspicion – sentiments that incite chauvinism, intolerance plus militancy.

The world is passing through very tumultuous times with extreme ideologies rearing ugly heads in several countries. While in many nations this is taking the form of armed militancy, in others, especially in European states, a dislike towards people of minority communities from other states is fuelling rabid anti-immigrant sentiments. Ultimately, society is becoming fragmented with pluralism becoming feeble. The world now needs a global drive against all sorts of prejudice based concepts that insidiously but inexorably influence impressionable minds. Unfortunately, countries that have always promoted equal rights for people from all backgrounds are often led by governments that are using highly inflammatory and divisive rhetoric.

The incident in Sri Lanka is not simply a result of radical beliefs but the product of a worldwide recrudescence of an ideology which is bigoted. Societies should stand in defiance against attempts by demented elements that sow discord and hatred. At the same time, religious leaders of all faiths should unite to denounce the perverted interpretation of religion. May all the affected families of Sri Lanka have the mental strength to overcome this ordeal.
