Water transport strike withdrawn

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The movement of water vessels resumed yesterday morning as the Water Vessel Workers’ Federation withdrawn their strike. They withdrew the water transport strike as the state minister for labour and employment Begum Monnuzan Sufian promised the implementation of a new salary structure within the next 45 days.

The minister met the protesting workers at midnight on Tuesday following their strike to press home their 11-point demand. The demands include the prevention of extortion and threats on river ways, social safety for water vessel workers, compensation of Tk. 10 lakh if a worker expires, a night-time allowance, and a special allowance for going to sea.

Bangladesh Lighter Vessels Sramik Union Central Committee member Jahangir Alam said after the meeting with the government they have postponed their strike for 45 days from 2am on Wednesday as in the meeting the workers demands will be met in discussion among the all parties.
