12 burnt in railway workshop fire
UNB, Chattogram

At least 12 workers sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out at the workshop of Bangladesh Railways in Pahartoli area of the city on Monday. Of the injured, eight were taken to Railway Hospital and Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Witnesses said the fire originated at noon while welding work on a train bogie was going on. The fire damaged around 27 seats of the bogie. Deputy Assistant Director of Chattogram Fire Service Md Jasim Uddin said the workers managed to douse the flame with fire distinguishers before firefighters reached the spot.


2 killed in Khulna road crash
UNB, Khulna

Two workers have been killed and nine others injured as a truck crashed into a pickup they were travelling in on Rupsa-Khan Jahan Ali Bridge in Rupsa upazila. The deceased were identified as Md Hasan, 45, of Baghmara village, and Farid Sheikh, 28, of Samantosen village in the upazila. They were workers of Sarah Super Store, regional distributor of Bashundhara LP Gas. Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Labanchhara Police Station, said the sand-laden truck hit the pickup from behind around 10:30pm on Saturday while trying to overtake it.


Siblings to die for killing teenager
BSS, Dhaka

A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced two brothers to death in a case lodged over murder of a teenager in capital’s Khilgaon area in 2011. Dhaka third additional metropolitan magistrate Robiul Alam passed the order in presence of the convicts Shahdat Hossain Babu, 42, and his brother Sazzad Hossain Piplu, 34. According to the case documents, Babu and Piplu slaughtered their tenant Ahmed Ali, 15, on May 11, 2011. Ali’s mother Nargis filed the case with Khilgaon Police Station. Detective branch (DB) inspector Sadik Mojibur Rahman on April 17, 2012, filed charge sheet in the case. The court on October 2, 2013, framed charges against the accused in the case. During the proceedings of the case, another two accused Sayed Ali and Milon Miah died and the court dropped their names from the case.


Probe report in Julhas-Tonoy murder trial May 14
BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday set May 14 for submitting probe report in the case lodged over the murder of former USAID official Julhas Mannan and his friend Tonoy Majumder. Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saiduzzaman Sharif set the date as detective branch (DB) of police failed to submit the report yesterday. Unidentified miscreants hacked Julhas and Tonoy to death at Julhas’s Lake Circus Road house under Kalabagan Police Station on April 25, 2016.
