Tigers World Cup squad announced

Fast bowler Abu Jayed Chowhdury Rahi was the only surprise of the 15-member Bangladesh squad for the looming ICC Cricket World Cup what was announced at the media block of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday. The showpiece 50-over event is scheduled to be held in the United Kingdom (UK) in between May 30-July 14.

Even though Rahi played five Tests for Bangladesh along with three Twenty20 Internationals, he is yet to play in ODI cricket. The 25-year-old pacer shot into the limelight for his impressive swing bowling during the last Test series in New Zealand.

Spin all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain Saikat on the other hand staged a comeback for the 50-over extravaganza event. Last time the all-rounder played Asia Cup for Bangladesh in September 2018. Recently, he showed his scintillation in the domestic cricket competition especially Dhaka Premier League (DPL), where he chalked up 428 runs including a century and four half-centuries from 12-match road string that actually won the faith of the selectors.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said clarifying their selection during the announcement of the Bangladesh squad for the England and Wales World Cup. Nannu said that Rahi will be useful for them in England condition with his dexterity to swing and move the ball. “As he got opportunity to play Tests in New Zealand condition, he didn’t get chance to play ODI matches. But we’ve seen that he has good enough swing on that condition. We’re expecting swing from our fast bowlers. But the bowling battery we have where less number of bowlers can swing,” said Minhajul Abedin Nannu said of Abu Jayed Rahi.

“As World Cup will be played on English condition, we’ve then tri-nation series, cold remains more in May-June. Temperature remains low also. It’ll be plus point for us if we include a fast bowler like him who can swing. From that point of view, Rahi has been included in the squad,” Nannu told media. The chief selector said that Mosaddek has taken for his all-round option that can be filled the void of Mahmudullah Riyad if needed.

“Saikat played well in domestic. We’re expecting an all-rounder, who can bowl off-spin. Riyad has an shoulder injury. He might not be bowled. We’ve picked Saikat as back-up of Riyad,” Minhajul said of Mosaddek Hossain Saikat.

It is speedster Taskin Ahmed, who came at the centre stage of discussion of all the fronts for his improved bowling display what he showed during the last Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), failed to make the cut due to his fitness problem as he is yet to fit completely after being recurred injury on his ankle.
