Summer health worries

As summer heat rises, people are suffering as many are facing diarrhoea accompanied with fever. Reportedly, ICDDR’B, the hospital for diarrhea treatment, has seen a rise in patients with 30-35 people admitted every day in the last four days. In addition, many children as well as adults are facing the downside of rising mercury. At this moment, the best course of action is to remain alert and check food before eating. In most cases, diarrhoea plus food poisoning occur when stale and rotten food is taken.

In this heat, even refrigerated food items become rancid fast since the cold temperature of the fridges often fail to keep up with the rising heat outside. Also, heating food more than twice or keeping any prepared dish outside for too long should be avoided at all costs. Children are the most vulnerable to diarrhoea and special attention must be given to ensure that they are not eating semi-rotten products at school. Diarrhoea during summer is not a new phenomenon and the only way we can tackle it is through proper dissemination of correct information. Sometimes, patients self-prescribe antibiotics, which need to be countered since taking of high power medication without proper consultation can have long term repercussions. Unfortunately, there is no effort from the city corporation wards to warn people which raises question as to the role of such bodies.

It’s the duty of city ward commissioners’ office to distribute leaflets about proper eating and drinking during high summer. Many cases exacerbate simply because people panic and fail to take the right course of action. While diarrhoea and fever will not kill, this condition can severely emaciate people and if left untreated can lead to severe lowering of essential electrolytes in the body. The government should take up an initiative to carry out a campaign about drinking fresh water. In certain cases, it would be advisable to drink only bottled water. One other thing most urbanites neglect is the washing of water purifiers which accumulate germs around the filter and pipes. These develop into bacteria, contaminating the water. A few cautious steps can easily keep diarrhoea at bay; also, in case of emergency, professional help should be sought immediately. If bottle water cannot be afforded, water should be boiled and cooled before drinking.
