Steps needed to protect water resources

Steps needed to protect water resources

Speakers at a discussion in Rajshahi recently in observance of the World Water Day opined that creating mass awareness has become crucial for protecting the existing water resources from further pollution and contamination to safeguard human civilization and biodiversity. They viewed the water resources in the region including its vast Barind tract should be protected and conserved through halting the land-based pollution.

Many rivers and water bodies of the country have died. The waters of the rivers around the capital like the Buriganga, Shitalakkhya, Turag and Balu have been polluted extremely due to industrial effluents and human waste. These rivers should be freed from the scourge of pollution.  Construction of scores of high-rise buildings in recent times has also taken its toll on the groundwater levels. The capital’s groundwater levels are dropping every year because of over exploitation of the aquifer by deep tube-wells and absence of proper recharging. Experts apprehend that the over exploitation of underground water may lead to a catastrophic situation for the city-dwellers. In the circumstances, the relevant authorities should come up with pragmatic measures to address the situation.   It is a matter of grave concern that vulnerabilities have been caused by abnormal declining of both underground and surface water resources in the dried area. Substantial and sustainable promotion of water and sanitation related modern technologies are the demand of time. The problem, however, can be mitigated to a greater extent through creating public awareness. Groundwater recharging is dependent on enriching the surface water resources. To this end, the derelict ponds, canals and other wetlands need to be brought under excavation and re-excavation.

Optimum aquifer recharge in the Hard Barind area is very important to protect its overall public health alongside the existing agricultural ecosystem through managing a groundwater basin efficiently and effectively. Dependence on underground water should be lessened by increasing the use of surface water and rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting can address the problem of safe drinking water to some extent. The country experiences sufficient rain during monsoon. Rainwater can be collected and preserved by using modern technology. As a long-term measure, the government can go for desalination of sea water for meeting the safe water crisis.
