‘Katka Tragedy Day’ observed

BSS, Khulna

Students, teachers and employees of Khulna University (KU) on Wednesday observed “Katka Tragedy Day”, a mourning day of KU history, with due respect and solemnity. On March 13 in 2004, nine students of Architecture Discipline of Khulna University and two students of the same discipline of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) drowned in the Bay of Bengal near Katka in the Sundarbans while they were taking bath during their picnic. To mark the day, KU authorities chalked out daylong programmes on the campus. The programmes began with a mourning procession wearing black badges

85 tonnes polythene seized

UNB, Dhaka

A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday seized 85 metric tons of polythene and raw materials from inside 22 factories in Sowari Ghat area in Old Dhaka. The mobile court lead by Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam of RAB headquarters conducted the anti-polythene drive from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. During the drive, the mobile court disconnected electricity connections of those factories on charges of producing banned polythene illegally and also fined Tk 26 lakh, said the executive magistrate.

Rupali Bank office catches fire

UNB, Khulna

A security guard of state-owned Rupali Bank's Khulna branch suffered burnt injuries in a fire that broke out at the bank in the city's Daulatpur area on Wednesday noon. General Manager of the bank Bilkis Banu said the fire broke out around 1:45pm, leaving a night guard injured while he was trying to douse the flame. Guard Hasib Molla has been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital, she added. On information, six firefighting units rushed in and doused the flame after their frantic effort of around half an hour, said Md Abul Hossain, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence.

2nd Asian Photo Fest begins

BSS, Rangpur

The three-day second South Asian Photo Festival-2019 kicked off at Rangpur Public Library auditorium in the city yesterday. Rangpur Photographic Society (RPS) with Rangpur Photo Journalists’ Association (RPJA) is jointly organising the festival at Rangpur Public Library auditorium dedicating to the supreme sacrifice of the martyrs for independence during the War of Liberation. Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Joynul Bari launched the festival by cutting ribbon at inaugural function as the chief guest.

34th death anniversary of Dr Aleem al-Razee today   

UNB, Dhaka

The 34th death anniversary of Dr Aleem Al-Razee, a noted jurist, parliamentarian, educationist and philanthropist who died on March 15, 1985, will be observed today with due solemnity. Razee was at the forefront of all political struggles and socio-cultural movements unleashed in the country to establish democracy, human rights and freedom of expression of people. Different voluntary, socio-cultural organizations and educational institutions have chalked out separate programmes to mark the occasion. Discussion meetings on the life and works of Razee are being organised among others by the Shandhani National Eye Donation Society (SNEDS). City Law College, Dhaka, Nagarpur Government College, Nagarpur and Dr. Aleem Al-Razee High School, Lawhati.Tangail. Dr. Aleem-AI-Razee Memorial Council members will lay floral wreaths and offer 'fateha' at Razee's graveyard in Banani in the morning and hold milad mahfil in Razee's remembrance on the day in his native village.
