Two goals in the second half steered Bangladesh national women’s football team to have a deserving 2-0 victory over Bhutan in the SAFF Women’s Football Championship yesterday. Held at the Rangasala Stadium Biratnagar, Nepal, Misrat Jahan Mousumi and Sabina Khatun struck a piece to endorse the favourite sides’ status as the elite with moving into the semifinal in the fifth edition of the regional women’s championship.

Bangladesh will take on Nepal in their group last match on tomorrow and they will have to win the match to be the group champions while the hosts will need only a draw to bag the top spot. Though the win was very much predictable against Bhutan counting their previous head to head meeting and their long run preparation before the competition but the Red-Green girls had to struggle for goal for a long 47 minutes when they did all but to score a goal in the first half.

Bangladesh, who deserved to be going through, but was very much unexpected that they would have to struggle just to open scoring when the Bhutan sides also deserved some credits to halt the favourites to a 2-0 margin victory.

The manner of the Bangladesh women’s progression characterized not only a finely tuned maturity and strength but endorsed their status amongst the regional elites when only due to the poor scoring it is hard to justify their ability.

Bangladesh women despite started the encounter as favourites with demonstrating better performance and also get hold the match under their full control throughout 90 minutes time and it was almost one-way traffic, failed to open the scoring in the opening half.

The reigning runners-up team even though playing with full authority at the Bhutan territory, due to strong marking and packed up defense Bangladesh girls could not open enough space to create real scoring chances but two half chances.

Mousumi and Monica could mark the target, when both of them took half chance from their long range shot but looked very aimless as their efforts were straight to goalkeeper gloves.

After the frustrating opening 45 minutes, Bangladesh  made a fresh start and took the lead right in the second minute through Mousumi.

On 47th minute it was one of the half a dozen corners Bangladesh earned and Monika set her pin-pointed left footer from left flank which dropped inside the area and at the goal-mouth melee, closely positioned Misrat Jahan Mousumi’s golden touch brought the lead (1-0).

After taking only 1-0 lead Bangladesh women continued their raids to increase the margin but the mighty Bhutan’s defense looked too good to break when Bangladesh players also failed to keep their momentum during the final pass and lost the possessions very often.

However, finally their long endeavor came to success with the captain Sabina Khatun slammed home a goal with a solo effort on 86th minute to seal the victory by 2-0.
