6 gold bars seized at airport

UNB, Chattogram

Customs officials recovered six gold bars, weighing 60 tolas, from the rectum a passenger at Shah Amanat International Airport in the port city yesterday. Jamal Uddin, who arrived here by a flight (G 9-526) of Air Arabia around 9:30am, was detained on suspicion, said Noor Uddin Milon, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Customs House. Later, an X-ray was done on him at a private diagnostic centre which detected metals hidden in his rectum. The gold bars worth around TK 24 lakh was recovered in presence of officials concerned, the customs official added.

Woman killed in road accident

UNB, Barishal

A woman was killed and three other people were injured when a bus crashed into a human-hauler on Barishal-Patuakhali highway in Rupatoli area yesterday. The deceased was identified as Renu Begum, 50, wife of Rouf Hawlader, a resident of 25 no ward of Rupatoli area. Sub-inspector Mostafizur Rahman of Kotwali Model Police station said that the accident took place around 9am when the Patuakhali-bound bus collided with the human hauler, leaving its four passenger injured.

1 held with 13,430 yaba pills

UNB, Chattogram

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a suspected drug trader along with 13,430 yaba pills from a hotel in Station Road area under Kotwali thana on Friday night. The arrestee is Shafiqul Islam, 22, son of Abdus Salam, hailing from Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar. On information, a team of RAB-7 raided the 1st floor of eight-storey hotel around 10:15pm and arrested Shafiqul, said a RAB press release. After searching his body and travel bag, the RAB members recovered the yaba pills worth Tk 67.15lakh.

65 arrested in Khulna

UNB, Khulna

 Police arrested 65 people, including nine suspected drug traders, from the areas under eight thanas in the city during the last 24 hours. Additional Deputy Commissioner Moniruzzaman Mithu of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said that KMP teams conducted the drive from 8 am Friday to 8 am Saturday and arrested them who are accused in different cases.

28 ‘muggers’ arrested in capital

UNB, Dhaka

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested 28 people for their alleged involvement in various crimes, including snatching of mobile phone and vanity bags, selling and buying stolen mobile phones and stealing shoes, from the city’s Mirpur area on Thursday night. The RAB-4 team started simultaneous drives at Mirpur-1 foot over-bridge, Sonny Cinema Hall crossing, in front of Shah Ali Market and Shah Ali Mazar areas around 6:00 pm on Thursday evening.

The team also recovered 22 mobile phones, 10 wrist watches, 14 vanity bags, and cash worth Tk 83,790 from their possessions, said senior ASP Mohammad Sajedul Islam Sajal of Rab-4.

Tk 28 lakh fined for violating traffic rules in capital

BSS, Dhaka

Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) fined Taka 28,30,255 and filed 5,498 cases against different modes of motor vehicles for violating traffic rules conducting drives in city’s different areas on Friday. During the operation, the DMP traffic authorities dumped 16 vehicles and wrecked 527, a DMP Traffic Division release said yesterday.
