No restraint in sale of unhealthy food

No restraint in sale of unhealthy food

Rajshahi University (RU) authorities, in association with the consumers' rights protection, have been continuing its drive against unhealthy food being sold on campus. But shop owners are still serving such food at  different points of the campus to students and teachers. Unhealthy food, prepared under the open sky, presents several health hazards. They could cause fatal diseases like cholera, typhoid, gastroenteritis, hepatitis and so on. They are contaminated with micro-organisms, harmful chemicals and additives.

But such food is still being prepared and eaten every day at the Tokitaki Chattor, station market, Binodpor bazar, Amtola Chatter, Kazla entrance, Fine Arts Faculty, dormitories and canteens. Flies and other insects are often found in these items. All the utensils are cleaned with dirty water.

Visiting various important points of the campus, The Independent found a large number of students, teachers and other employees eating such food in open-air eateries. The food items are prepared with loose’soybean oil and cheap materials. The same cooking oil is used over and over again until it turns black, which could be very dangerous for health.

A large number of shops on the campus are also seen selling seasonal cakes. Most of these cakes are prepared in an unhygienic condition.

On February 27, a mobile court, led by executive magistrate Hasan Maruf and Aporbo Roy, fined eight food shops at Rajshahi University (RU) Tk.45,000 for selling unhygienic items on the campus. There were some repeat offenders, including Food Shop, in this list. On November 22, 2018, the police arrested Food Corner owner Nizam Uddin Alam and his relative Munna following an assault on the proctor by some encroachers when the university official led an eviction drive.

On 17 January, three shops were fined Tk. 12,000 in the station market area for the same reason. On December 10, a grocery shop was sealed off because it was allegedly selling cold drinks, mineral water and food items well past their sell-by dates. The store was located near Syed Amir Ali Hall on the campus.

Kazi Johorul Islam, president of the Consumer Youth-Rajshahi University (CY-RU), alleged that shop owners on the campus have long been serving dirty and stale food. "Waste materials could be seen just beside most of these shops. This pollutes the environment. We will talk with authorities concerned about taking action against these shops," he added.

Monir Hossain, an unnamed shop owner at Tokitaki Chattar, said they use the same cooking oil until it turns dark. Otherwise it is not possible to sell the food at such cheap rates, he added.

Dr Fakir M Abu Zahid, deputy chief medical officer of RU, said: “A good number of students have been suffering from malnutrition and stomach diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis due to lack of vitamins in their receiving meal. They suffer all kinds of stomach diseases due to regular intake of such unhygienic foods."

RU proctor Prof. Dr Luthfor Rahman said: “The authorities have formed a five-member monitoring committee to check the matter. We will ensure food safety on the campus and take against those shop owners who have been selling stale and unhygienic food."
