None being killed in ‘crossfire’, says Kamal

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said no one is being killed in the name of crossfire. He said, “I am clearly saying that the law enforcers are not killing anyone in the name of crossfire.” The minister was addressing at an anti-drug rally at BG Press Field in Tejgaon area of the capital yesterday. Mentioning the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy against the drug menace, Kamal said, “When policemen were in anti-drug drives, drug dealers fired at them with illegal weapons.

The law enforcers had to fire back at them for self defence. Policemen don’t open fire at the innocent civilians.” “Of the drug traders, those want to surrender will be given legal assistance. Rehabilitation will be managed. The ongoing anti-drug drives will be continued countrywide, and the drug dealers must go to jail,” he said.

“None will be spared across the country,” he warned the drug dealers in a bid to save the future generations. Those who were arrested and now in prison, most of them are related with drugs. The Home Minister informed that a tough law against narcotics has been enacted and said the law enforcers will take appropriate measures to implement the law.

“The capacity of our jails is 35,000 but there are 95,000 inmates. Most of them are being arrested in narcotics cases. Because of our tough stance, drug users, peddlers and dealers are in jail.” Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) Director General Jamal Uddin Ahmed, psychotherapist-writer Dr Mohit Kamal, physician and media personality Dr Arup Ratan Chowdhury and Dhaka district’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan, among others, addressed the rally.
