17,208 employees of land ministry submit wealth info

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka

A total of 17,208 of 17,576 employees of the land ministry and its five departments in 64 districts have submitted their wealth statements to the ministry so as to maintain transparency and eradicate corruption. The remaining 368 employees have failed to submit their wealth statements as many of them are facing divisional cases and have been temporarily suspended from their jobs or are on long-term leave.

“We want to ensure transparency in our ministry. We won’t tolerate any irregularities by any employee under the ministry. That’s why we’ve decided to monitor every employee strongly so that they won’t be able to be involved in any irregular practice,” land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury told The Independent yesterday (Saturday).

He said it was exemplary that the employees of the land ministry have submitted their wealth statements within a very short period of time. “I am committed to the people to ensure smooth services in every land office. This would discourage employees’ involvement in irregularities and corruption,” the land minister said.

He thanked the employees for submitting their wealth statements and sought the cooperation of all to ensure transparency in the land sector.

“Such submissions of wealth statements will continue from now onwards. It would be possible to free the land offices of corruption through a strong monitoring system,” Chowdhury said in reply to a query. He further said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made him a minister for his honesty, and he would rid the land ministry of corruption at any cost.

Earlier, on January 17, the land ministry had issued a circular to Class III and IV employees of the ministry to submit their wealth statements by February 28. The employees then started submitting their respective wealth statements after calculating their wealth as of December 31, by filling up specific columns.

The ministry has taken up short-, medium- and long-term activities for the next five years. The minister had announced a 90-day programme on nine activities of his ministry under the first phase. The submission of wealth statements was one of the nine important activities as part of the 90-day programme.

The other activities are: installation of a hotline for providing emergency services, observance of land week across the country and introduction of ‘khatian’ service through an online system and ‘e-namjari’.

The land ministry introduced online ‘khatian’ service on February 27 and ‘e-namjari’ on February 11 across the country.
