DU BCL vows 'dream campus'

Independent candidates being united ahead of DUCSU polls
DU correspondent

'Sammilita Sikkharthi Sangsad', led by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), yesterday announced its poll manifesto, ahead of the coming DUCSU polls, and pledged to make Dhaka University (DU) a "dream campus".

BCL general secretary, Golam Rabbani, presented the manifesto, and BCL central president, Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, introduced its full-fledged panel to students on the DU Aparajeya Bangla premises.  The main points of the BCL manifesto are: making DU a fully residential university, bringing the varsity under full automation, doing away with evening courses and the seven affiliated colleges of DU, public vehicle control in the varsity area, increasing research allocations, teachers' evaluation system etc.

BCL central president Shovon said: "The university administration has deprived the students from their fundamental right to vote in the DUCSU. We are happy that we are going to participate in the polls. The BCL alone can fulfill the aspirations of the students. If we win, we will dedicate our full-fledged panel for students’ wellbeing.

BCL DU unit general secretary, Saddam Hossain, conducted the programme.

A number of BCL activists and leaders from different residential halls were present.

Several independent candidates and panels of different halls were seen to be united with central independent candidates for DUCSU and hall union elections scheduled for March 11.

An eight-member independent panel of the Samsunnahar Hall yesterday declared their support for another independent candidate, ARM Asifur Rahman, vying for the general secretary's post of the DUCSU at a press conference at Madhu's Canteen. Earlier, Swadhikar Satontro Parishad, an independent platform of 12 candidates for the central union and another two panels of the Ruqayyah Hall (Ruqayyah Parishad) and the Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall also declared their support for Asif at a different press conference.
