A five-day Iranian film festival and a photo exhibition began yesterday at the Bangladesh National Museum (BNM), Shahbag, and Nalinikanta Bhottoshali Exhibition respectively in the capital.

Iranian Cultural Centre Dhaka and Bangladesh National Museum have jointly organised the film show and photo exhibition on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (National Day).

The inauguration of the programme was held at the main auditorium of the BNM on Friday. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Md Murad Hasan was present as the chief guest at the discussion and executive editor of amadersomoy.com Rashidul Islam presented the keynote speech.

Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Bangladesh Mohammad Reza Nafar and eminent actor and film director Tauquir Ahmed were special guests.

A discussion titled ‘40 years of Islamic Revolution in Iran: Achievement and Potentials’ was held as part of the film festival. Tauquir Ahmed discussed how Iranian films have become so developed.

He said: “Whenever we take part in a film festival to compete, I feel as if I am not going to win. When I see that there is a Turkish film, I think they’re going to take the prize and we’ll fare poorly. Turkish films always focus on human conditions and humanity. They deal with the greatest creation of God that is human. Our films need to focus on humans and their living conditions. Iranian films are just going to do that.”

Acting cultural counsellor of Iran Cultural Centre Dr Seyed Mahdi Hosseini delivered the welcome speech with National Museum secretary Abdul Mazid in the chair.

The inaugural programme was followed by the screening of the film, ‘M for Mother’, directed by Rasoul Mollagholipour.

Iranian films will be screened from 11am to 3pm at the poet Sufia Kamal auditorium of the BNM, while the photo exhibition will remain open every day from 10am to 5pm at Nalinikanta Bhottoshali Exhibition hall till February 12. The photo exhibition features photography and paintings by eminent Iranian artists.
