ABT planned to ‘kill newspaper editor’

RAB arrest 4 operatives of banned militant outfit
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained four suspected members of the banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from the capital’s Uttara area around 2.00am yesterday. The ABT members were planning to murder a national daily newspaper editor, whose name was left out in the briefing. They also intended to attack a jail to free their chief, Jashimuddin Rahmani.

RAB director (legal and media wing) Mufti Mahmud Khan said that acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-1 conducted a raid in the Uttara area and arrested them. The RAB officer was talking to those present at its media centre at Karwan Bazar in the capital. The RAB said those detained are Sharier Nafis Ammar Hossain (20), Md Rasel, alias Sajedul Islam Gifary (24), Rabiul Islam, alias Nurul Islam (24), and Abdul Malek (31).

Mufti Mahmud said the four had been planning a "target and kill" mission against listed online activists and bloggers of the country.

“The ABT has been involved in killing several online activists and bloggers in the past. Now, they are using chat groups on social media platforms to identify other online activists and bloggers. This time, they were planning to kill the editor of a national daily, which published a criticism of the Hadith (record of the traditions or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) on marriage, some other renowned personalities and online activists,” he said.

The RAB media director said that after initial interrogation it was found that they were trying, secretly, to revive the organisation.

Arrested ABT militants told RAB that they currently had 92 members, who are divided among various cells controlled by a person identifying himself as Aman. They are campaigning through four-five Facebook pages at Aman’s orders. Their main objective was to free the organisation’s chief, Jasimuddin Rahmani, from jail. They even had plans to break Jasimuddin out of jail, through an attack, if efforts to release him through legal means failed. They also admitted that they all are active members of the ABT.

“Legal action is being taken against those detained,” he added.

Shahriar, hailing from Dhunat upazila of Bogura, studied till class seven in a madrasa.

He joined the ATB after being influenced by Aman through Facebook.

Md Rasel, alias Sajedul Islam, hailing from Fulgachia of Bhola, passed the SSC in 2013 and took up a job in a garment factory. He, too, was influenced by Aman on Facebook and joined the ATB.

Nurul Islam, hailing from Bogura, passed Dakhil exams in 2010 and got admitted to the Bogura Polytechnic in 2015. He was radicalised by Shahriar and joined the ATB.

Md Abdul Malek, a driver, was influenced by Rasel on the social media and joined the ATB in 2018.
