4 to die for murdering woman

The husband of a woman is among four people sentenced to death over her murder in 2011.

Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the maximum punishment yesterday.

The convicts are - Subir Kumar Roy, Sushil Kumar Roy, Sunil Kumar Roy and Monoranjan Roy. Subir was the husband of victim Sumi Roy. The court also fined them Tk1 lakh each.

According to the prosecution, Subir married to Sumi, daughter of Gopinath Biswas of Tangail. in 1999. Subir used to torture his wife for dowry since their marriage. On January 12, 2001, Subir along with his family members beat up Sumi after she had refused to bring dowry from his father. At one stage, they strangled Sumi and tried to pass it on as suicide. But the autopsy report revealed that it was a murder.

Manirul Islam, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station, filed a case against four people. After examining records and witnesses, Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Fazle Khoda Mohammad Najir handed down the verdict.

Road crash kills 4 in Bagerhat

Four people were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on Khulna-Mawa Highway in Fakirhat upazila yesterday.

The deceased were identified as the truck’s driver Kamruzzaman, 32, son of Samsuzzaman of Satkhira district; Mahamudul Hasan, 15, a schoolboy from Khulna and Bipin Poddar, 51 of Mollahat upazila. The identity of the fourth victim could not be known yet.

Moloy Roy, sub-inspector of Katakhali Highway Police outpost, said the accident took place around noon when a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Tungipara Express’ collided head-on with a truck, killing three people on the spot and injuring 21 others. Of the injured, five were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital. But one of them succumbed to his injuries.

Traffic on the busy road remained suspended for about two and a half hours after the incident.

Man held with firearms, bombs

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a man along with a pistol, two rounds of bullet, four Molotov bombs and 10 crude bombs from Bhakum village in Singair upazila early yesterday.

The arrestee is Tamij Uddin, 55. Major Abdul Hakim of Rab-4, said that hiding his identity, Tamij Uddin informed RAB over phone that a huge quantity of arms and bomb making materials were kept at the village. On information, a team of RAB conducted a drive at the village around 3 am and recovered the arms and the bombs near the house of Baser Fakir.

However, tracking Tamij Uddin’s mobile phone number the RAB team arrested him. During primary interrogation, Tamij confessed that he had kept the arms and bombs beside the house of Baser as Tamij’s son Rakib is an accused in a case over the murder of Baser’s son Russel.

200 hapless women get blankets

About 200 women of Kaiyarhat area under Fulchhari upazila in the district received blankets from Ladies’ Club here yesterday.

Yasmin Matin, chairperson of the club, handed over the blankets among 190 distressed women as the chief guest at Kaiyarhat Government Primary School on Monday afternoon. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Hamid Tolstoy, district relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali, assistant commissioner (land) of Sadar upazila Raonok Jahan, members of the club – Rezia Akter, Sahenur Fazilatunnesa, Dilara Islam, and Nilufar Begum Lucky – and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman were present on the occasion.
