Celebrating a history spanning more than 4,000 years, the Chinese New Year and Spring Festival—one of the most important traditional festivals of the Chinese nation—was celebrated with a two-day festival named ‘Happy Chinese New Year Gala-2019’ at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), located in Segunbagicha area of the capital, on Thursday and yesterday (Friday).

Artistes of China’s Yunnan Art Troupe, the well-known Plateau Art Troupe of China’s Minzu village and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy’s acrobatic team of 20 youngsters enthralled the audience with their captivating performances.

The event was organised jointly by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Centre, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Yunnan province and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The celebration of Chinese New Year and Spring Festival 2019 in the capital began with an outstanding dance show titled ‘Colourful Yunnan’ by the Yunnan Art Troupe on Thursday evening. Then an acrobatic show titled ‘Cap Dance’, performed by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy’s acrobatic team, too, left the audience mesmerized. Artistes from China and Bangladesh presented various performances on the first day of the event.

Alongside the different dance and acrobatic performances, such as dance shows titled ‘Blessing’, ‘Sweet Silver Bell’, ‘Grand Festival’, ‘Best Wishes’ and ‘The Delight WA Village’, and acrobatic shows titled ‘Chou Diao’, ‘Hula Hoop’, ‘Blanket Balance’, ‘Diabolo’, ‘Pipe Balance’ and ‘Cycle Balance’ were also presented during the two-day festival.

China’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Zhang Zuo, attended the inaugural segment of the ceremony as the chief guest. Bangladesh’s former information minister, Hasanul Haq Inu, was present as the special guest at the ceremony. BSA director-general Liaquat Ali Lucky delivered the welcome speech at the programme.

Ambassador Zuo said, “Cultural exchange is an important bond through which friendly ties between Bangladesh and China can be developed and enhanced on all fronts. Cultural exchanges are a key part of and a solid foundation for China-Bangladesh strategic partnership of cooperation in the new era.”

Apart from this, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage exhibition was held. It included the art of ‘sugar painting’, a traditional Chinese form of folk art that uses hot, liquid sugar to create three-dimensional figures, by Cheng Fangyuan, and embroidery in traditional Yi patterns by You Dingmei, which were exhibited during the two-day festival.
