Hasina to unveil stance against graft, terrorism

The Awami League (AL) is set to hold its grand rally today (Saturday) at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city to celebrate its landslide victory in the recently held general polls. The party has taken elaborate preparations to make the rally a grand success. AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, along with his party colleagues, held a series of meetings with different fronts and associate bodies of the party in this respect. This will be the first political rally in the city after the December 30 general election.

The programme will start at 2:30pm. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the victory rally as chief guest. Party leaders expect that Hasina, who is also president of the AL, will unveil her government’s firm stance against corruption, terrorism and drugs in the rally.

Talking to reporters at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office in the city, Obaidul Quader said: “Our Prime Minister will reiterate her government’s zero-tolerance policy against  corruption, terrorism and drugs. She will also call upon her party’s rank and file to stay away from those in the rally.”

“The Prime Minister will come up with an important message. She will warn party activists to refrain from abusing power,” he added.

Hasina will also reveal her government’s future development plans in the rally, noted Quader. Party insiders say Dhaka will turn into a human sea with the spontaneous participation of AL leaders and workers. Pro-liberation forces of the country will also join the rally. Several senior leaders say that the main objective of the rally is to display the AL's organisational strength and popularity.

They also say the party will thank the people through the rally for voting in favour of the AL-led alliance in the December 30 polls.   AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman yesterday said their all preparations have already been completed to make the rally a grand success. “We have taken huge preparations for making the rally a success. And I hope the rally will be successful with the participations of tens of thousands people from across the country. Dhaka will turn into Sheikh Hasina’s city on Saturday,” he added.

“The main objective of our rally is to extend thanks to the people for bringing AL to power for the third consecutive time,” he added.

Speaking to The Independent yesterday, AL Dhaka south city unit general secretary Shahe-Alam Murad said AL activists and common people will participate in the rally. On his part, Obaidul Quader said people will spontaneously take part in the ‘historic rally’.

“I hope people will throng the Suhrawardy Udyan as they are satisfied with the development works carried out by the Sheikh Hasina government,” he added. He also called upon all leaders and activists of the party to attend the rally to make it a success.
