Mainul gets bail in 13 defamation cases

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The High Court yesterday granted bail to Barrister Mainul Hosein for six months in 13 defamation cases. The HC bench also stayed the trial proceedings of 15 defamation cases filed against him for the next six months. The HC bench comprising Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Zafar Ahmed came up with the order after hearing 15 petitions filed by Mainul seeking bail and stay in the cases. Deputy Attorney General Khurshidul Alam told that Mainul cannot get released from the jail as he was arrested in a few other cases.

However, Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said that there is no legal bar for Mainul to get released from jail following the High Court order as he have already secured bail in all other cases filed against him.

Mainul was arrested on October 22 in a case filed for defaming journalist Masuda Bhatti on a television talk-show. Members of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced Mainul before the court on 23 in connection with a defamation lawsuit filed in Rangpur.

On October 16, Mainul Hosein was connected to the talk show programme ‘Ekattorer Journal’ on Ekattor TV. The show was being hosted by Mithila Farzana. While on air, Mainul made ‘offensive comments’ against Masuda Bhatti.

During the talk show, Masuda Bhatti told Mainul Hosein: “You say that you’re in the Jatiya Oikya Front as a citizen of the country. But on social networking sites, many people are saying that you are there as a representative of Jamaat-e-Islami.”

Angered by the comment, Mainul Hosein replied: “I’m thanking you for your audacity. I believe you are ‘characterless’. There’s no question of having any Jamaat link. I find your question rather embarrassing.” After such comments, there was a storm of criticism in social media. Various individuals and organisations gave statements calling for a public apology from Mainul.

A total of 22 defamation cases were filed against Mainul with different police stations in the country.
