Nowadays many people travel abroad to work, especially in the IT, Tourism and HR sectors. With this also comes the stress of wondering what skills are needed to get a job abroad, whether our degree will be recognized in the new country of residence, or how to go about making the best out of what we have. Working abroad requires certain skills in the youth so that they can have fulfilling international careers. Which skills should you look out for when hiring someone from abroad? First and foremost, the willingness to learn the language and culture of the country is important to working abroad. Knowing at least a little bit shows that the individual has a broader mindset when it comes to dealing with the locals of that particular place, and enables them to communicate effectively. Lacking such basic knowledge can create misunderstandings among locals and may get an applicant to be rejected from the job they are applying for. If more than one language are spoken in the country and one is able to master these languages gradually, this person is usually looked at with admiration and is respected in the host country; not to mention that this can be the key to securing a good international position and standard of living.

Employers today only choose the best candidates, and often these are the graduates who have gained international experience by studying abroad.

From knowledge of different cultures and international communication skills, to problem-solving skills and adaptability, here are five of the top employment skills you can expect to gain as an international student. At European University (EU), in addition to an international curriculum, participants are surrounded by professors and classmates from many countries. In a system integral to the European University academic philosophy, every European University student has the chance to discover and live in three different countries during their programme. Graduates who have gained international experience by studying abroad have obtained first-hand knowledge of another country’s culture and protocol and will be better prepared to understand the 21st century business world. EU bachelor’s and MBA participants can decide to spend each term in one of four different cities where their international experience varies: Barcelona, Geneva, Montreux and Munich. Each of these EU main campus locations is a business hub full of innovation and energy, where multinational corporations and organisations stand alongside cultural sights, entertainment spots and architectural masterpieces. Studying abroad strengthens people’s independence, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills. Employers will know that they will be able to rely on these future employees in a variety of situations.

When faced with a problem abroad, an individual must use their own initiative, draw on their personal experience and employ problem-solving skills on their own. From dealing with minor issues to larger, more daunting problems, international students have to stand on their own two feet; a stance that will serve them well in working situations. Overcoming obstacles can also lead people to better weigh up difficulties, analyse issues more carefully and ultimately become more decisive. Moving abroad can be daunting and overwhelming. There is no doubt that relocating to another country, whether it’s for three months or three decades, is a challenge. Students who make the most of opportunities to study in a new place strengthen their ability to adapt. They work out how to settle in, acclimatize and adjust to their new environment. Some do this very quickly, allowing them to enjoy their time studying abroad from very early on. Others may initially take longer; however, the more they move and challenge themselves, the more easily they adjust. Even though workers' recruitment by Saudi Arabia has dropped to half in 2018 due to different hurdles and complications, the rich Middle Eastern country is still the largest destination for Bangladeshi unskilled workers. About 2.33 lakh workers went to Saudi Arabia from January to November last year although the Kingdom recruited over 5.51 lakh in the previous year.

As the Kingdom is undergoing some sorts of reforms nowadays, we think the competition for the job would be tougher in the coming days. To tackle the situation, Bangladesh government must take skill development programmes along with mandatory language course to grab the competitive job market. It is not for only Saudi Arabia, these training programmes would help our jobseekers in every corner of the world.  In 2018, Saudi Arabia recruited 33.64 per cent of Bangladeshi workers who migrated with short-term jobs while Malaysia became the second largest destination. Qatar, Oman and Singapore were consecutively third, fourth and fifth destinations for Bangladeshi workers in last year. Most of the workers have migrated to overseas countries from Cumilla with 51,935 workers in 2018 though followed by Tangail, Brahmanbaria, Dhaka and

Chattogram. With the rise of migrant workers; their rights violation, abuse, indecency, workplace, and lack of housing and utilities in those countries have become a matter of concern. Exploitation by middlemen is very common in rural areas what at the end indulges fortune seekers in agony. The migrant aspirants sell their valuables, including lands and homestead, to go to the desired countries. Creating alternative destinations and involving the unskilled laboureres in skill development programmes is prime need at this moment.

Currently, the unemployment rate and the rate of new job generation are disproportionate while the private job creation is very low and midlevel jobs are occupied by foreigners in most offices. We hope, the authorities concerned will take initiatives to explore more and more destinations for the country's growing labour force. But first of all, our labour force must go through skill development programmes before going to other countries.

Despite all the benefits of studying abroad, the majority of today’s students still don’t take up the opportunity, making your international experience even more notable and worthwhile. Having to communicate in another language, whether it is the language of your destination or the universal business language, English, increases confidence levels and improves networking and communication skills, adding to your overall employment skills. Learning about the art, cuisine and history of another culture develops your understanding of others; something vital to working and succeeding in the global business world. By having a standardized curriculum across the entire network, EU makes it easier for students to change from one campus to another without missing a beat. With a life outside a person’s usual setting, adaptability is of immense importance. Somebody may be great at learning the host country’s language and lifestyle, but may not necessarily be comfortable with it. Adapting to the latter can be a challenge as forced interactions, fake accents, and social anxiety can easily be noticed from a foreigner by the residents of a particular country. Flexibility can thus be helpful here, as any flexible person knows how to adapt to a new way of living, without losing his or her own habits and culture. There needs to be a balance between the culture of the foreign country and that of the individual. Having such skills will indeed impact positively on landing a job position itself, and can greatly help in team building or simply getting to know colleagues at the workplace.
