Warner optimistic of making Sylhet their fortress

Sylhet Sixers captain David Warner is quite hopeful of making the Syhet International Cricket Stadium as their fortress as he believed that the advantage of playing in home ground will bring lady luck for them.

The Warner-led team had already moved to Sylhet in which they will play four matches in five days. It looked to be a tiring job but Warner insisted that the home ground advantage would help them turn the fortune.

“We want to make our home a fortress and we can't wait to go back there,’’ Warner said yesterday. Despite making headlines as pre-tournament favourites, vastly for the inclusion of David Warner, Sylhet Sixers are yet to make a big impact in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

With two losses from three matches in BPL so far it is quite clear that they are yet to come up with a combination that can be termed as unbeatable as their local batsman failed to blaze apart from Afif Hossain, who dazzled with 45 runs during  their only win the tournament so far. The inability of Sabbir Rahman and Nasir Hossain to come up with their natural prowess so far raised the question whether they need to shuffle their batting order and make a slot for Nicholas Pooran up in the order.

Just three batsmen reached double figures against Dhaka Dynamites in their last group phase match, told a tale how vulnerable their top order batting is.

They were down and out inside the Powerplay losing four wickets as Dhaka's bowlers were terrific with their line and lengths and reduced them to 75/7 before it turned out to be a Pooran-show as he single-handedly kept his team afloat and entertained the crowd striking 9 sixes in his innings 47ball-72.

As the team moves to Sylhet to start the second phase of the tournament that will begin on January 15, Sixers believe it will help them to achieve success as well as entertain the home crowd with the brand of cricket they are expected to deliver.

Pace bowler Taskin Ahmed echoed the same sentiment during the post match press conference as he believes there will be challenge of meeting up the expectations of home crowd.

“I think there will be huge crowd and they will give us good support. Every team is quite balanced in BPL and the teams with whom we will play over there are all in good shape at the moment,’’ said Taskin.

“Though we have lost the match we will try to come back strongly at our home ground,’’ he added. However, Taskin believe it is easier to say than doing it as the wicket will be more batting friendly in Sylhet than what they are experiencing at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium and as a result their bowling unit need to regroup as soon as possible.

“It will be challenging for the bowlers as lot of runs were even during the last T20 international against West Indies,’’ said the pace man.

“The bowlers need to take the extra responsibility,’’ he said adding most importantly Sixers need to deliver in the middle.
