Govt seeks report on rice prices

Special Correspondent, Dhaka

The government has started collecting information on rice prices across the country following recent media reports on anomalies in price hike of rice. As part of the drive, the government has written to the deputy commissioners of 64 districts to collect the real scenario of rice price and related information and send the report to the food ministry within two days, food ministry sources said. The sources said coarse rice was being sold at Tk 39.56 per kg, medium rice at Tk 45.29 per kg and fine rice at Tk 54.29 in kitchen markets in the country yesterday. “We are gathering information from various corners based on media reports regarding the recent price hike of rice. We have adequate stock of foodgrain in public godowns,” food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said yesterday. According to sources, the government had a national public stock of foodgrain amounting to over 13.71 lakh tonnes till yesterday.

Both the commerce and food ministers had met rice mill owners and traders on Thursday. The latter assured the ministers that rice prices will come down within a week.

On their part, the traders blamed the “shortage of transport” for two-three days during the December 30 national

polls for the recent hike in rice prices.

However, sources in different kitchen markets said the national election was over on December 30 and so there was no reason to hike rice price after 13 days.

Wholesale traders at Mohammadpur Krishi Market and Mirpur-1 kitchen market accused the rice mill owners and traders of being responsible for the recent price hike.

They said they were selling different types of rice for over Tk 2-6 per kg compared to the past few weeks.

The price of rice has risen by Tk 2 to Tk 6 per kg compared to last week and Tk 100 to Tk 300 per 50-kg sack (depending on the variety), they added.

According to food ministry sources, the price of coarse rice has remained steady although there was a price rise for the finer varieties.

The government targets to keep the price of coarse rice stable as it’s the staple food of the common people in the country.
