Over 50 illegal establishments removed in Ctg
BSS, Chattaogram

Chattogram district administration in a drive yesterday evicted over 50 illegal establishments, including shops and dwelling houses, from the land of the Roads and Highways Department at Hathazari upazila of the district. The unauthorized illegal slums established on the land of the roads and highways that gradually turned into shops in Farhadabad area under Hathazari upazila of the district were evicted. Ruhul Amin, Upazila Nirbahi officer of Hathazari upazila along with police members conducted the drive and evicted 50 semi-pucca shops and houses from Farhadabad area.


300 cold-hit people get blankets in Rajshahi
BSS, Rajshahi

More than 300 poor and distressed cold- stricken people were given blankets for lessening their sufferings caused by the present sweeping cold wave in the city. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) donated and distributed the blankets at its school premises in Hetemkha area yesterday. BDRCS City unit Vice-President Rejaul Karim, General Secretary Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan and Executive Members Prof Nurul Hossain Chowdhury, Prof Farida Sultana, Prof Abdus Salam, Dr Masudul Haque and Advocate Jamshed Ali were present on the occasion. Speakers said the BDRCS will extend more cooperation towards the distressed and needy people in the days ahead. They urged all other humanitarian and volunteer organisations including public and private sectors, banks and other financial establishments to stand beside the cold-hit people to lessen their sufferings during the cold weather.


Six houses gutted in Ctg BSS, Chattogram

At least six dwelling houses were gutted in a fire at Hathazari upazila of the district this morning. Jashim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defense in Chattogram, said the fire originated from a cooking oven at a dwelling house in the area around 9.05 am and quickly engulfed the adjoining houses. Two firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control around 10.55 am.


‘Pitha Festival’ held in capital UNB, Dhaka

Women Entrepreneurs Association of Bangladesh (WEAB) is holding a ‘Pitha Festival’ in the capital’s Kalabagan. A variety of traditional pithas, including Bhapa, Chitoi, Patishapta, Mug Pakon, Pua, Puli, are being showcased in the event. Sides of Mashed spices and meat have also been put on display. Dr Gowher Rizvi, international affairs adviser to the prime minister, attended the event as the chief guest. He lauded WEAB’s efforts to give women a platform to contribute to the country. “Possibilities are endless for such an enterprise,” he said, stressing significance of organisations like WEAB for individual designers. WEAB President Nasreen Fatema Awal thanked all members of the organisation who attended and worked for the event. She also spoke about procedures WEAB follows to support the entrepreneurs from Dhaka and other regions. “WEAB never marks up prices of products sent by the entrepreneurs and designers,” she said. WEAB first Vice-president Salma Masud agreed with her and wished the event success. Former FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmad was also present at the event. The festival is open for everyone. It will continue until 8pm Saturday and is being co-hosted by Pragati Insurance Limited and Lal Teer Seed Limited.
