Girl kidnapped in Barishal
UNB, Barishal

A minor girl was kidnapped by miscreants from the courtyard of her house at College Road Natun Masjid lane of the city on Sunday. Victim's father Binay Sammader said his daughter Dipa Rani, 3, went missing while playing in front of his house around 10:30am. Meanwhile, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Tk 40 lakh over mobile phone from Dipa's father and threatened to kill the little girl if they do not get the money. Later, Binay informed the police. Nasir Uddin Mallik, assistant commissioner of Detective Branch of Police of Barishal Metropolitan Police, said they are trying to rescue the girl.


Tk 903cr contraband items seized
UNB, Dhaka

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members seized smuggled goods and other contraband items, including yaba pills and phensidyl syrup, worth around Tk 903.74 crore during its countrywide anti-smuggling drives in 2018. Sources at the BGB headquarters said the paramilitary force recovered smuggled goods worth around Tk 1,217.55 crore in 2017 while the amount was Tk 1,161.67 crore in 2016. The BGB also handed over 2,705 people to local police stations for their alleged involvement in smuggling and 1,316 others for illegal border crossing from January 1 to December 31. The smuggled items included 93,800 saris, 26,085 three-piece sets, 195.789 kgs of gold, 118,836 metres of clothes, 43,059 pieces readymade garments and 72,470 kgs of Indian tea. Contraband drugs included 12,658,518 Yaba tablets, 359,150 bottles of Phensidyl syrup, 33.351 kgs of heroin, 13,682 kgs of cannabis, 79,286 bottles of foreign wine, 36,435 cans of bear and 19,448 sedative injections.


10 held with 155 sacks of stolen chemical in Ctg
UNB, Chattogram

Police recovered 155 sacks of chemical, which were stolen on January 1 while being transported from the importer's warehouse, from a warehouse in Bakolia of the port city on Sunday. They also arrested 10 people over the recovery of the stolen chemical.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) SM Mostain Hossain said the manager of M/S Goodluck Transport & Trading Agency filed a case with Patenga Model Police Station on Saturday after 155 sacks of chemical went missing from two covered vans while being sent to dealers from the warehouse of importer 'Rafi Trade International' on January 1.
Police arrested two people identified as Salauddin and Abdul Mannan and they confessed to stealing the chemical, he said. According to their information, police recovered 155 sacks of chemical from Janani Poultry Feed warehouse near Chaktai Fire Service Station and arrested others, Mostain said.


BSTI fines Tk 56,500 in Rajshahi, Rangpur
BSS, Rajshahi

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has penalised 18 shops Tk 56,500 in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions in December last year for selling and manufacturing adulterated food items. Eight mobile courts of the BSTI Rajshahi regional office in association with local administration conducted drives in different parts of the two divisions and found the shops selling substandard food items, violating the rules and regulations.
The courts also realised Tk 56,500 from the shop owners during the drives conducted in four districts under the divisions.
BSTI Director (Rajshahi) Taher Jamil said the regional office conducted the drives against the shops involved in manufacturing substandard and adulterated food items.
