Chattogram Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md Elias Hossain expressed his 'shock', by way of reacting to an attack on BNP contestant for Chattogram-10 constituency Abdullah Al Noman. The officer also directed the police to investigate the matter with urgency, as Noman addressed the allegations to him in a views-exchange meeting with candidates of 6 constituencies (Chattogram-4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11) at circuit house in the port city.
As a returning officer, Elias said he was pledge-bound to treat all candidates equally, and assured to provide the candi them a fair election atmosphere, he said. Abdullah Al Noman said that he brought out a procession after gaining permission from police to inaugurate a victory rally at Nayabazar in Halishahar of the city.
"I and my followers came under attack by Juba League men while I was delivering speech. I was cordoned off and the attackers tried to shoot me. I have that picture. Although I phoned some police officials immediately to protect me from the attackers, the police only came a long time later," he alleged.
Divisional Commissioner Abdul Mannan, Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Ctg Range Abul Foyz, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime & Operation) Amena Begum, Regional Election Officer Md Hasanuzzaman, and many others administrative officials were present on the occasion.
