Man dies in police custody

UNB, Dhaka

A man died under police custody in the city early Sunday, hours after his arrest in Jatrabari area. Police arrested Jamal Uddin Ripon, 45, accused in several cases, from Sheikhdi area of Kajla around 11 pm on Saturday. Officer-in-charge of under Jatrabari Police Station Kazi Wazed Ali said Ripon fell sick soon after his arrest. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor around 12:05 am. Ripon was suffering from various diseases, including high blood pressure, he OC said, adding that they suspected that Ripon died of heart attack. “However, we’ll be sure after getting the postmortem report.

4.256 kg gold seized at Ctg

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) officials detained a Biman passenger with a piece of gold weighing 4.256 kg from a flight at Shah Amanat International Airport here yesterday morning. The detainee was Mohammad Shaokat Akbar, hailed from Fatckchari upazila of the district. Shaokat reached the airport on a Bangladesh Biman flight BG-148m from Dubai at 10 am, Assistant Commissioner of Airport Customs Mahbubur Rahman told BSS. Later, on secrete information, the CIID officials recovered a big size gold bar from his bag. A case was filed with concerned police.

DMP files 2,129 cases for traffic rule violations

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Sunday filed 2,129 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation. It also realised around Taka 13.76 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release. Of the total cases, 358 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 37 for using hydraulic horn, four for using hotter and beckon light and 17 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 1,047 cases against motorcycles and seized 73 others for violation of the traffic rules.
